As families prepare for a new school year, safety should remain at the top of every parent’s checklist—especially when it comes to car seats. With more cars on the road during morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups, ensuring children are properly secured can help prevent injuries in the event of a crash.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the correct use of car seats can reduce the risk of fatal injury in a crash by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers. Yet, research shows that nearly half of all car seats are installed or used incorrectly.
“Back-to-school season brings busy schedules and quick trips, but safety should never be rushed,” said Leticia Hardy, Family & Community Health Agent, Fort Bend County, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. “Taking a few extra moments to check your child’s car seat can make all the difference.
Safety Guidelines for Parents and Caregivers
· Rear-Facing Seats: Infants and toddlers should ride rear-facing until at least age 2 or until they reach the seat’s height/weight limit.
· Forward-Facing Seats: Children who outgrow rear-facing seats should use a forward-facing seat with a harness until ages 4–7.
· Booster Seats: Once children outgrow forward-facing seats, they should ride in a booster until seat belts fit properly—usually between 8–12 years old.
· Seat Belts: Children are ready for a seat belt alone when the lap belt lies snugly across the upper thighs (not the stomach) and the shoulder belt fits across the chest and shoulder (not the neck).
· Back Seat Only: All children under 13 should always ride in the back seat.
