DPS Releases Update on Investigation into Threat Against State Lawmakers

AUSTIN—On Saturday, June 14, 2025, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Capitol Region was notified of a threat made against Texas state lawmakers. Earlier that day, a concerned citizen contacted local authorities to report that a man was on his way to the protest at the Texas State Capitol, planning to harm state lawmakers.

Out of an abundance of caution, DPS immediately evacuated the Texas State Capitol Building and Capitol Grounds and began to investigate the alleged threat—which was determined to be credible.

Through the investigation, the suspect was located traveling on SH-71 in Fayette Co. At around 1:30 p.m., DPS Troopers stopped the suspect vehicle for speeding. During the traffic stop, the suspect in the case, who is not being identified at this time, told the Trooper he had a handgun in the vehicle. The suspect was arrested on a misdemeanor traffic charge and taken into custody for further questioning about the threat. The gun was also seized.

At this time, no charges related to the alleged threat against state lawmakers have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing. More information may be released if it becomes available.

DPS takes all matters of personal security and public safety very seriously. The department continuously monitors events and their impact on public safety across the state and nation, and we work closely with federal agencies, other state agencies and local law enforcement partners to combat any potential danger in Texas. As always, the department will adjust operations, including personnel and resources, as needed to ensure we are able to address any potential and emerging threats.
