Discover the Benefits of Using Music for Dementia, Alzheimer’s

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library will feature a special program for families and caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia on Saturday, June 14, from 10:30 to 11:15 am, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy.

In the program, “Memory Disco for Seniors,” Anika and Anish Ganesh explain the power of focused musical engagement to improve the lives of those living with dementia.

As communication becomes increasingly difficult with dementia, music offers a way for individuals to reconnect with long-ago memories, helping to recall a sense of familiarity, happiness, and peace.

Designed with the help of leading neurologists in dementia care, the practice of using music with those affected by dementia combines numerous well-researched strategies for improving mood, cognition, & behavior into a single music-based activity.

Caregivers are encouraged to bring their loved ones affected by dementia or Alzheimer’s to the program to experience an activity in which maracas and rhythmic engagement can be used to improve focus and attention span.

Previously known as The Dementia Project, the Day By Day Project is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization. Anika Ganesh is a certified volunteer for Musical Memories Katy – the volunteer wing of the Day By Day Project. A member of the Board of Directors for the Day By Day Project, Anish Ganesh has an undergraduate degree in neuroscience and is an MD candidate.

The program is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, and registration is required.
