The following free programs will take place at the Maud Marks Library during July. We will be closing at 5 PM on Thursday, July 3, and closed Friday, July 4, to Sunday, July 6, for Independence Day.
Book Sale
The Friends of the Maud Marks Library will hold their June book sale on Saturday, July 26 from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM. There is a large selection of hardback fiction and nonfiction, as well as children’s books and paperbacks and other hidden gems. We will also be hosting a Friends Members-Only preview on Friday, July 25 from 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM. All items sell for rock bottom prices.
Children’s Summer Reading Program
Summer Reading Program begins June 2nd. This year’s theme is “Color Our World”. There will be weekly story times and special programs for children of all ages. Readers will earn points for reading and will earn exciting prizes. All programs are free although most Monday programs do require tickets. Join us this summer for an exciting time!
Afternoon Adventures and Family Programs
On Mondays, elementary school aged children are welcome to the library for special programs. Tickets will be given out 30 minutes before each performance. Priority seating is for children ages 5-11; little kids and parents will be allowed in as space permits.
Monday, July 7, at 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM: Mad Science. Get ready for an explosion of color as we ignite the brilliance of indoor fireworks and make colors appear and disappear before your eyes. Join us in creating the rainbow with the help of exciting chemicals. Watch in awe as foam colors and streamers burst into action. Immerse yourself in the kaleidoscope of creativity and fun!

Monday, July 14, at 1:30 PM and 3 PM: Creature Teacher. Join us for interactive animal experiences with Creature Teacher. Venture on an extraordinary animal educational journey filled with laughter, learning, and awe-inspiring creatures.
Friday, July 18, at 1:30 PM and 3 PM: Dance to Learn with Houston Ballet. Dance to Learn is a movement integration program, that approaches academic curriculum from a kinesthetic
perspective. Houston Ballet teaching artists work to create lessons that address TEKS in multiple subject’s areas while building social emotional skills.
Monday, July 21, at 1:30 PM and 3 PM: Adventures in Storyland. Join Dante, a “Teller of Tales” on an exciting and interactive voyage to the land of stories, where the storybird lives. With his magic flute, Dante recounts stirring tales from various lands, exposing the participants to the traditions of several cultures.
Monday, July 28 at 1:30 PM, 3 PM: Rob Holladay Balloon Show. The magical balloon guy will amaze you with balloons, magic, books, comedy and more!
Summer Arts and Crafts
Join us for a fun summer arts and craft time presented by National Charity League volunteers on Wednesday, July 9 and July 23 at 4 PM. This program is for elementary school-aged children.
Teen and Tween Summer Reading Program
Teens and tweens, come “Color Our World” at your Maud Marks Library this summer! We are so excited to offer library adventures from battle robots to meeting Texas reptiles! All events are free, but many will require tickets picked up at the customer service desk 30 minutes before the program begins.
Teens and Tweens Paint with Watercolor Pencils
This colorful program will focus on creating compositions using graphite transfer and grid technique to develop subject matter. Teaching artist Joseph Dixon welcomes all skill levels! Grades 4-12, Tues, July 1, 3:30-4:30PM.
Native Texas Reptiles Encounter for Teens and Tweens
Learn about Native Texas Reptiles and the chance to interact with ambassador reptiles with Zookeeper Melissa! This program is strictly for 4-12 graders. Tickets may be picked up at the customer service desk 30 minutes before the program begins. Thurs, July 10, 3:30-4:30PM.
American Robotics Academy Battle Robots for Teens and Tweens
Tweens and teens, grades 4-12, can build remote controlled LEGO robots provided by the American Robotics Academy. The robots will then compete in battles against other robots! Redesign robots and put them in battle again! Tues, July 15, 3:30-4:30PM. Tickets may be picked up at the customer service desk 30 minutes before the program begins.
Teen and Tween Minecraft Lost City of Atlantis Adventure
In this exciting and immersive Minecraft experience, kids will learn Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) skills and work together to journey from Plane Crash Island to Atlantis. This is an excellent 1.5-hour program your 4th-12th grader will surely enjoy. Thurs, July 17, 3:30-5PM.

Academic Advising
As an incoming college student, many of you might have questions about how to begin your academic journey. What classes should you take? What classes are required, and when should you take them? Who do you turn to? Navigating a college campus is difficult enough, but it doesn’t have to be something you do alone. Jigsaw Puzzle Challenge
Do you think you are a puzzle master? At the Maud Marks Library, we want you to prove it!
On Saturday, July 12 at 2 PM, the Maud Marks Library is challenging you to make puzzles. Sign up your team with a maximum of 5 puzzlers, smaller teams may be combined to form a team of 4-5 puzzlers, and each team will be given a table with a puzzle. Color Analysis
Join us on Monday, July 21, at 6 PM to learn about color analysis. Color analysis is a tool to determine your best colors. Based on your natural coloring, you are assigned one of twelve color seasons. Listen to a general overview on the power of color analysis and an explanation on how it works.
Laser Cutter Orientation
This orientation session on Wednesday, July 9, 5:30 PM-7:30 PM will instruct participants on how to use the laser cutter in the library. Those completing the class will then be able to schedule time to use the laser cutters at HCPL branches and MakerCentral, at which time they will complete a short machine-specific orientation at the location of their choice. Attendees will receive the Laser Cutter and Dremel DigiLab LC40 badges in Beanstack upon completion of orientation. Registration is required and space is limited! Sign up today!
3D Printer Orientation
This orientation session on Saturday, July 19, 10 AM-12 PM will instruct participants on how to use the 3D printer in the library. Cricut Orientation
This orientation session on Monday, July 28, 5:30 PM-7:30 PM, will instruct participants on how to use the Cricut in the library. Those completing the class will then be able to schedule time to use the Cricut machines at HCPL branches and MakerCentral, at which time they will complete a short machine-specific orientation at the location of their choice. Timeless Travelers: Center for Contemporary Craft and Contemporary Arts Museum Seniors 55+ are invited to join the Maud Marks Library’s Timeless Travelers program for a trip to visit the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, visit the thought-provoking exhibitions and explore the Craft Garden. Also, visit the OUT OF STOCK exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Museum featuring artwork by over 30 teen artists responding to questions surrounding consumer culture. The bus will be departing on Thursday, July 3.
Registration runs June 16-June 21, 2025. Timeless Travelers is a program series promoting educational and cultural enrichment for senior adults. Once a month, we will take free bus trips across southeast Texas to experience the culture and history of this great state. The only requirement is that you are old enough to attend (55+). Thanks to the Friends of the Maud Marks Library for sponsoring this series.
“Read & Rhyme Story time” – Pre-school Story time
This program, offered on Tuesdays at 10:15 AM provides children (ages 3-5) with early literacy skills through oral language, phonological awareness and print recognition.
Crafts and or coloring sheets will be provided for children at the end of story time.
“Patty Cake Baby Story Time” Baby Story time
Join us for an interactive early literacy experience for infants and their caretakers on Wednesdays at 10:15 or 11:15 AM. This program geared to 3-17 months features nursery rhymes, songs, books, and fingerplays!
“Totally Toddler Time” – Toddler Story time
Toddler Time provides a fun early literacy experience for toddlers aged 18– 35 months on Thursdays at 10:15 or 11:15 AM. Toddlers participate through songs, finger plays, shared reading, parachute fun and group activities.
