HOUSTON, TX – Amid an increase of deed fraud schemes impacting Harris County residents, the Harris County Attorney’s Office will host its quarterly, estate planning event ‘Lasting Legacies’ to educate the public on how to secure their homes and assets through wills, transfer-on-death deeds, and other key tools.
Last month, HCAO sued a Houston couple for forging legal documents to falsely claim ownership of at least 35 properties across Harris County. In many of these cases, the accused fraudsters targeted residents who passed without a will.
Lasting Legacies is designed to provide attendees with practical steps to begin or strengthen their estate plans and prevent legal complications for their loved ones. Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee will deliver a presentation that provides key information to help residents prepare for the future. Representatives from community organizations including Lone Star Legal Aid and the Houston Bar Association will also be on hand to offer immediate, actionable assistance.
The event is hosted in partnership with Harris County Precinct One Commissioner Rodney Ellis, Harris County Judge Dolores Lozano, Justice of the Peace Precinct 2, Place 2, and Harris County Public Probate Administrator Brandon Cofield.
