Maud Marks Branch Library—June Programs

The following free programs will take place at the library during June. Please call 832-927-7860 for further information. The library will be closed Thursday, June 19, for the Juneteenth holiday.

Book Sale

The Friends of the Maud Marks Library will hold their June book sale on Saturday, June 28, from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. There is a large selection of hardback fiction and nonfiction, as well as children’s books and paperbacks and other hidden gems. We will also be hosting a Friends Members-Only preview on Friday, June 27, from 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM. All items sell for rock bottom prices.

Mini Canvas Portraits

All ages are welcome to participate in creating mini canvas portraits on Wednesday, June 25, at 6:30 PM. All supplies will be provided, and we will display them in the library during the month of July. Registration is required.

Children’s Summer Reading Program

Summer Reading Program begins June 2nd. This year’s theme is “Color Our World”. There will be weekly story times and special programs for children of all ages. Readers will earn points for reading and will earn exciting prizes. All programs are free although most Monday programs do require tickets. Join us this summer for an exciting time!

Afternoon Adventures and Family Programs

On Mondays, elementary school aged children are welcome to the library for special programs. Tickets will be given out 30 minutes before each performance. Priority seating is for children ages 5-11; little kids and parents will be allowed in as space permits.

Monday, June 2 at 1:30 PM: Petting Zoo. Come and pet your favorite animals in the petting zoo.

Monday, June 9 at 1:30 PM and 3 PM: A Puppet Pizzazz Extravaganza! Puppeteer Mr. Greg Seamlessly weaves entertaining puppet characters of varying sizes, dimensions and styles, while sharing behind-the-scenes secrets used to create and manipulate them. This show inspires you to make your own puppets!

Monday, June 16 at 1:30 PM and 3:00 PM: Books Alive presents Three Nasty Gnarlies. When three funky, frolicking, dump-dwelling creatures see themselves through the eyes of a glamorous butterfly, their world is turned upside down. Alas, there is only one thing left to do…they too, must become butterflies!

Monday, June 23 at 1:30 PM and 3:00 PM: Bright Star Theatre presents Peter Pan. This summer, Bright Star will bring this literary classic to life in a hysterical play within a play. Kids will love the antics of Tinkerbell, the bumbling Captain Hook, Darling Wendy and of course the free-spirited adventurous boy who just wouldn’t grow up.

Monday, June 30 at 1:30 PM: Soldiers of American Revolution. Three soldiers in one presentation! Today’s Americans find it hard to comprehend the difficulties the patriots of the American Revolution had to endure. This program begins with a fully equipped British soldier. Each item of uniform and equipment is explained. This standard is then contrasted with the typical American Continental soldier and rifleman.

Art Class for Kids with Frida Kahlo

On Friday, June 6, at 3 PM Express Children’s Theatre presents AN ART CLASS FOR KIDS WITH FRIDA KAHLO, commissioned by Rothko Chapel. Thanks to a time-bending twist, the iconic artist Frida Kahlo will travel from 1940s Mexico to lead an art class for Houston families! Materials will include crayons and colored pencils and everyone will get a chance to make self- portraits and learn about Frida in the process. Space is limited. Tickets will be given out 30 minutes before each performance.

Summer Arts and Crafts

Join us for a fun summer arts and craft time presented by National Charity League volunteers on Wednesday, June 11 and June 25 at 4 PM. This program is for elementary school-aged children.

Teen and Tween Summer Reading Program

Teens and tweens, come “Color Our World” at your Maud Marks Library this summer! We are so excited to offer library adventures from making art to treasure hunting! All events are free, but many will require tickets picked up at the customer service desk 30 minutes before the program begins.

Summer Kickoff for Teens

Will you be in grades 6-12 in August? Then this party is for you! Personalize a button, decorate a cupcake and more! Tuesday, June 3, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM.

Summer Kickoff for Tweens

Will you be in grades 4-5 in August? Then this party is for you! Personalize a button, decorate a cupcake and more! Thursday, June 5, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM.

Dragon Party for Teens and Tweens

Grades 4-12 come decorate a dragon eye, toss some sheep with a catapult you build, and leave with a Viking hat you craft! Thursday, June 12, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM. Tickets will be available at the customer service desk 30 minutes before the program.

Calligraphy for Teens and Tweens

Learn to turn daily writing in calligraphy art with Junrui Garcia. Explore how and why some cultures value calligraphy and the significance of handwriting in our digital age.

Grades 4-12, Tuesday, June 17, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM. Tickets will be available at the customer service desk 30 minutes before the program.

Teen Manga and Fantasy Drawing

Grades 6-12 come learn drawing tips and tricks for manga and fantasy! Tuesday, June 24, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM. Tickets will be available at the customer service desk 30 minutes before the program.

Teen and Tween Minecraft Pirates’ Treasure Island Adventure

On this swashbuckling Minecraft adventure, teens and tweens join their pirate crew to team up. We’ll see which group of young pirates can find the most treasure while exploring sailing ships, the harbor village, and a massive island. It’s a thrill-seeking 1.5- hour event for grades 4-12! Thursday, June 26, 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM. Tickets will be available at the customer service desk 30 minutes before the program.

Adult Summer Reading Program

It’s that time of year again! Summer has arrived, and with it, the Summer Reading Program which begins June 3. This year’s theme will be “Color Our World.” We will have special summer programs throughout the summer. Adults who complete the summer reading program will receive exciting prizes! All programs are free. Join us this summer for a colorful time!

DIY Workshop

Join us on Tuesday, June 10 at 2 PM as we make faux stained-glass bookmarks. Registration is required for this event and seating is limited. Sign up online today!

Laser Cutter Orientation

This orientation session on Saturday, June 7, 10 AM -12 PM will instruct participants on how to use the laser cutter in the library. Those completing the class will then be able to schedule time to use the laser cutters at HCPL branches and MakerCentral, at which time they will complete a short machine-specific orientation at the location of their choice. Attendees will receive the Laser Cutter and Dremel DigiLab LC40 badges in Beanstack upon completion of orientation.

Cricut Orientation

This orientation session on Friday, June 13, 4 PM-6 PM, will instruct participants on how to use the Cricut in the library. Those completing the class will then be able to schedule time to use the Cricut machines at HCPL branches and MakerCentral, at which time they will complete a short machine-specific orientation at the location of their choice. Attendees will also receive the Cricut and Cricut Air badges in Beanstack upon completion of orientation. Registration is required and space is limited! Sign up today!

3D Printer Orientation

This orientation session on Monday, June 9, 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM will instruct participants on how to use the 3D printer in the library. Those completing the class will then be able to schedule time to use the 3D printers at HCPL branches and MakerCentral, at which time they will complete a short machine-specific orientation at the location of their choice. Attendees will

receive the 3D Printer and Dremel DigiLab 3D45 badges in Beanstack upon completion of orientation. Registration is required and space is limited! Sign up today!

Watercolor Art

Join us on Friday, June 20, at 2 PM to enjoy a calming and creative watercolor art class for adults. This class is presented by Cordovan Art Class, Katy. Due to limited space, registration is required for this class.

Local Author Fair

Join us on Saturday, June 21, from 10 AM – 1PM and learn about books written by local authors. There will be opportunities to speak to the authors and listen to a variety of stories. Also, enter for a chance to win cool prizes in our raffle!

Color Escape

Join us on Thursday, June 26, at 2 PM to from summer heat and stress to enjoy a calming coloring program for adults. Enjoy some refreshments while you color.

Timeless Travelers: Asia Society Texas Center

Seniors 55+ are invited to join the Maud Marks Library’s Timeless Travelers program for a trip to visit the Asia Society Texas Center. The Asia Society Texas Center is an educational institution that educates the public about Asia, share insight into current events in Asia, and celebrates voices from Asia and its diaspora. The bus will be departing on Thursday, June 5.

Registration runs May 19-May 24, 2025. Timeless Travelers is a program series promoting educational and cultural enrichment for senior adults. Once a month, we will take free bus trips across southeast Texas to experience the culture and history of this great state. The only requirement is that you are old enough to attend (55+). Thanks to the Friends of the Maud Marks Library for sponsoring this series.

“Read & Rhyme Storytime” – Pre-school Storytime

This program, offered on Tuesdays at 10:15 AM provides children (ages 3-5) with early literacy skills through oral language, phonological awareness and print recognition. Crafts and or coloring sheets will be provided for children at the end of story time.

June 10 we will have a special story time: Storybook Opera present Fairy Tales –Two well- known fairy tale in one presentation.

“Patty Cake Infant Time” – Infant Storytime

Join us for an interactive early literacy experience for infants and their caretakers on Wednesdays at 10:15 or 11:15 AM. This program geared to 3-17 months features nursery rhymes, songs, books, and fingerplays!

“Totally Toddler Time” – Toddler Storytime

Toddler Time provides a fun early literacy experience for toddlers aged 18– 35 months on Thursdays at 10:15 or 11:15 AM. Toddlers participate through songs, finger plays, shared reading, parachute fun and group activities. Please arrive 15 minutes before the program to receive a ticket which will be used to attend the program.
