The Lone Star Flight Museum will welcome more than 300 aspiring aviators to the museum’s Girls in Aviation Day presented by ExxonMobil, on Saturday, September 21, 2024. The day has a single goal: to inspire girls ages 8 to 17 toward careers in the STEM and aviation industries. From pilots, mechanics and air traffic controllers to engineers and flight attendants, the sky’s the limit!
Girls in Aviation Day blends history, science, and technology to spark curiosity with an aviation-themed curriculum. This year’s event will be highlighted with the following:
– Nearly one dozen visiting aircraft on the ramp for participants to tour and talk with pilots
– Flight simulators and hangar talks
– Hands-on mechanics experiences, drone “STEMonstrations” and a meteorology workshop
– A career fair with dozens of companies and organizations that will talk with the girls about how their jobs impact the aviation industry
The day will be topped off by an inspiring panel discussion sponsored by H-E-B, featuring aviation industry leaders, Captain Teresa Ferry, Commanding Officer of Navy Reserve in Houston; Nia Gilliam, United Airlines Captain and Founder of Sisters of the Skies; and Marcela White, pilot and Owner of Tavaero Jet Charter. Special guest moderator, Dr. Shelly Lesikar DeZevallos, pilot, president of West Houston Airport, and chair of the TXDOT Aviation Advisory Committee will encourage the attendees to ask the panel questions about their careers, their life and how they can become leaders too.

Launched a decade ago by Women in Aviation International, this day celebrates the incredible achievements of women in aviation, while inspiring the next generation of female aviators. 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of Girls in Aviation Day with thousands of girls participating around the world.
Anna Hawley, President & CEO of the Lone Star Flight Museum said, “Girls in Aviation Day at Lone Star Flight Museum has grown year over year. This year, because of the generous support of our presenting sponsor, ExxonMobil, and other supporters, we are excited to welcome more than 300 girls at this year’s event, doubling last year’s attendance. We believe aviation inspires achievement and endless possibilities, and that is exactly what Girls in Aviation Day is all about.”
“We are proud to support the Lone Star Flight Museum as they empower the next generation of women to explore careers in STEM,” said Alvin Abraham, global manager of corporate giving at ExxonMobil. “They are committed to inspiring and creating opportunities for young women and we are honored to support Girls in Aviation Day in this venture.”
