Nearly 200 Volunteers Perform over 500 Hours of Service to Commemorate 6th Annual Month of Service

Katy, Texas: This past weekend, the Katy Texas Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints proudly marked its 6th annual month of service with a resounding display of community solidarity. Nearly 200 volunteers from various walks of life united in service to uplift and support three vital organizations: Sleep in Heavenly Peace, The Coastal Prairie Conservancy, and the Brookwood Community.

In a remarkable demonstration of collective effort and dedication, over 500 man-hours of service were generously contributed, embodying the spirit of compassion and selflessness that defines the Katy community.

Highlights of this year’s service initiative include:

  • Sleep in Heavenly Peace: Approximately 120 volunteers collaborated to assemble 55 beds and deliver 48 beds to deserving children in the Houston area. This effort provided essential comfort and security to those in need, ensuring a good night’s sleep for children who otherwise might go without.
  • The Coastal Prairie Conservancy: A dedicated team of 45 volunteers worked tirelessly to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of the coastal prairie ecosystem. Their efforts included trail maintenance, restoration of native plants, and litter cleanup, contributing to the sustainability and resilience of this vital ecological resource.
  • The Brookwood Community: Thirty-five volunteers rallied to support the

Brookwood Community by replacing siding on parts of two of their 48 greenhouses, repotting over 800 plants, and assisting in the completion of a fence in the back of one of their community buildings. This hands-on assistance plays a crucial role in maintaining and improving the facilities that support individuals with disabilities.

The tradition of the annual month of service was born out of the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in 2017, when members of the Church who were affected by the storm received overwhelming support from the community. In a gesture of gratitude and solidarity, the Katy Stake initiated this tradition the following year, aiming to give back to the community that had shown such immense kindness.

The Katy Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints encompasses approximately 4,000 members in the Katy area, with congregations that convene in English, Spanish, and Mandarin. This diverse and inclusive community is united by a shared commitment to service and compassion.

This year’s month of service not only provided tangible assistance to local organizations but also fostered deeper connections within the Katy community, embodying the principles of unity, empathy, and mutual support.
