Master Gardeners offer free class about lawn care

“Growing a Great Lawn” is a free online class that will be offered March 22 by Texas Master Gardeners of Fort Bend County.

The class on how to keep a good-looking lawn with minimal care will begin at 1 p.m. and be presented by Boone Holladay, Horticulture County Extension Agent for Fort Bend County.
Register in advance by visiting Events for March 2024 (fbmg.org)

This class will address the basics of grasses suitable for this area as well as their characteristics. Holladay will go over turf grass maintenance and common lawn problems experienced by homeowners.

Holladay said, “It’s all about learning the practical management steps to grow a good lawn – doing things that make sense; minimizing inputs as far as fertilizers and pesticides and keeping a pretty lawn without a whole lot of extra work.

“Avoid overapplying fertilizers; avoid encouraging weed development and then looking for herbicides to kill those weeds with all that stuff ending up down in the creek bottoms and flowing down to the watersheds,” he said. “These are people who have to or want to grow lawns and it’s our job to show them how to do it the right way and minimize those unnecessary inputs.”
The class is part of the Landscape Success series. Other classes in the series are: Flowering Plants for 4 Seasons on April 26, Using Irrigation Wisely on May 24, Shade Gardening-Ideas and Tips on June 28 and Tree Care Basics on Aug. 23.
