UHD Offers a Unique Way for Houstonians to Engage With Election Candidates

Election Public Deliberation: “How Should We Decide What Speech Is Acceptable/Unacceptable on Social Media?”

The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) is offering Houstonians a unique opportunity to get to know the mayoral and city council candidates in the upcoming election when it hosts its “Election Public Deliberation” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023, at UHD. The event will take place in the One Main Building Complex in Room A-300. Lunch will be provided, and registration is required.

The topic to be deliberated is “How Should We Decide What Speech is Acceptable/Unacceptable on Social Media?” This deliberation aims to foster mutual learning between the candidates and those they seek to represent, and all participants will talk and listen in five, small-group rounds.

“This gathering is an opportunity for Houstonians to engage with each other as well as candidates in meaningful conversations on a topic that affects us all,” said Dr. Windy Y. Lawrence, Professor and Director of the UHD Center for Public Deliberation. “Participants do not need to be experts to join in these discussions, and the candidates will be both listening to others and offering their ideas.

While the event starts at 11 a.m., doors will close at 11:30 a.m. to help prevent distracting the extended discussions. Parking will be provided for participants who are not members of the UHD community on a first come, first served basis in the Visitor Parking Garage, 1201 Girard Street. Additional paid parking is located in front of the Visitor Parking Garage and on surrounding downtown streets.
