Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston members receive surprise shopping spree at Academy Sport + Outdoors as part of the ACLS “Texas Showdown”

Friendly competition with Boys & Girls Clubs of Tarrant County adds to the fun

To celebrate the ACLS “Texas Showdown” between the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers in the American League Championship Series, Academy Sports + Outdoors hosted a surprise shopping spree on Oct. 17 for 15 members of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston. These kids and teens also participated in a shopping challenge against the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tarrant County in North Texas.

Each Club member chosen received a $100 gift card to shop the Academy store at 9734 Katy Freeway in Houston for all new Houston Astros gear, apparel, shoes and outdoor equipment. In Dallas, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tarrant County members were also gifted with a $1,500 shopping spree as they geared up to cheer on their hometown team, the Texas Rangers.

The rivalry continues as Academy ups the ante with a friendly competition. Following the shopping sprees, both the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston & the Boys and Girls Clubs of Tarrant County selected two Club members to represent them as they competed in a Texas-sized challenge.

The two kids chosen as representatives had 30 seconds to grab as much Houston Astros or Texas Rangers gear from the store as they could. Then, the total price of each team’s haul was tallied.

The team with the highest total received an additional $2,500 gift card for their Club, which was Boys & Girls Clubs of Tarrant County. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston got a $1,000 gift card for their efforts, which will be put to good use at Academy.

The CEOs of each respective Boys & Girls Clubs have also made a friendly wager. The Boys & Girls Clubs with the winning ALCS team will receive a celebration party courtesy of the other Club’s CEO, giving Houston fans another reason to cheer the Astros on.

“Academy Sports + Outdoors created a unique opportunity for our youth to cheer on our Houston Astros, to shop for needed personal items and have fun,” says Kevin Hattery, President & CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston. “This is a memory that will last a lifetime.”

In total, Academy will donate $6,500 to Boys & Girls Clubs across North Texas and Houston.
