Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council is celebrating International Day of the Girl from Oct. 7-14, with a week of community service activities in partnership with the Houston Food Bank.
International Day of the Girl is an annual and internationally recognized observance on Oct. 11. It celebrates girls and promotes activities that amplify their voices. As the largest girl‐led organization, Girl Scouts supports girls on their path to making a difference in the community and beyond.
Throughout the week, Girl Scouts and their troops can volunteer at local food banks or partner with a United Way agency to participate in council wide opportunities. Girls are also encouraged to host local activities to understand the importance of giving back to their communities and to celebrate the Girl Scout motto, “Do a good turn daily.”
Girl Scouts can join GSSJC in celebrating this day by taking part in one or more of the council’s planned activities with the Houston Food Bank:
Girl Scouts and troops unable to attend one of the council-sponsored community service activities are encouraged to perform acts of service within their communities. Troops can plan activities based on the girls’ interests or follow one of GSSJC’s suggested activities:
- Create a birthday box for an area women’s shelter or foster group home.
- Decorate lunch bags for kids’ meals.
- Host a children’s book drive.
- Clean a community garden or start a garden for an area school.
The first 2,000 girls who share their International Day of the Girl service stories will receive a free Day of the Girl patch. For more information about International Day of the Girl, please visit the GSSJC website.
