October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and as part of this observance, Harris County Pets (HCP) is waiving adoption fees for all dogs and cats from October 1-15 during the national “Empty the Shelters” adoption event hosted by BISSELL Pet Foundation.
BISSELL Pet Foundation, a national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending pet homelessness, sponsors reduced adoption fees of $50 or less per dog or cat during each nationwide event. The foundation is hosting the “Empty the Shelters” event in more than 345 shelters in 42 states, including HCP.
People can visit the Harris County Pets Resource Center at 612 Canino Road in Houston to see all adoptable pets and benefit from the adoption special from October 1-15. They can also view photos and bios of all adoptable animals at the shelter at CountyPets.com.
HCP’s adoption hours are Monday through Friday, 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Adoption appointments are not required.
All adopted pets at HCP are spayed or neutered, are microchipped, receive their age-appropriate vaccination, and receive their one-year pet license at Harris County. These services are included with the adoption fee, which is free during the “Empty the Shelters” event.
“You do not need to live in Harris County to adopt any of our pets. Anyone living outside the county is also welcome to visit us,” said Corey Steele, director of Harris County Public Health’s (HCPH) Veterinary Public Health Division, which operates HCP. “We are pleased to join forces with the BISSELL Pet Foundation and other shelters in the country during ‘Empty the Shelters’ to ensure that many of our animals find loving, forever homes.”
ADOPT A SHELTER DOG MONTH
Besides the “Empty the Shelters” event, HCP is also encouraging residents to adopt a shelter dog throughout Adopt a Shelter Dog Month in October. Adopting a dog from a shelter is a rewarding experience that can bring joy and companionship into your life.
There are many benefits to adopting a shelter dog. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, studies have shown that the bond between people and their pets is linked to several health
benefits, including decreased blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels, feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and symptoms of PTSD.
“There are so many amazing dogs waiting for their forever homes at Harris County Pets,” said Steele. “When you adopt a shelter dog, you give them a second chance at a happy and healthy life.
“You are also helping to make a difference in the community by reducing the number of homeless animals,” Steele added. “Adoption is a life-long investment that benefits both owners and pets. We ask that prospective adopters research and consider all options before bringing a pet into their home.”
Things to Consider Before Adopting a Shelter Dog
Adopting a dog is a fulfilling experience, but it is essential to be prepared. The tips below can help ensure a smooth and successful transition for you and your new furry friend.
- Consider your lifestyle and needs. Do you have enough time to walk, exercise, and play with a dog? Do you have an active lifestyle or prefer relaxing at home with a companion in your spare time? Are there small children in your home? The answer to these questions may impact the type, size, temperament, and energy level of a dog that might be a good fit for you.
- Check your space. Do you have a confined yard or other safe outdoor space for a dog to run around in? Do you live in an apartment or rental home that allows you to have a pet? Make sure to secure any dangerous household chemicals or objects away from the reach of your pets.
- Check your wallet. Are you prepared for the financial commitment of owning a dog, including the cost of food, veterinary care, and grooming? According to a recent report by Rover.com, the average price of feeding and caring for a dog annually in the United States ranges from $610 to $3,555. This range varies depending on several factors, such as the dog’s size, breed, health condition, and location.
- Meet and greet your future companion. There are many wonderful dogs available for adoption at HCP. When you visit, ask the shelter staff about a dog’s history, medical condition, and temperament. HCP employees interact with the animals daily and may share some knowledge about a particular animal from shelter records. You can also read the kennel cards displayed for each animal in the shelter for details.
- Be prepared to train your dog. All dogs need basic training, such as sitting, staying, and coming. You can train your dog on more advanced commands like housebreaking and leash walking. Many resources are available to help you train your dog, such as books, online articles, and training classes. Some pet retail stores may offer dog training classes from basic to advanced levels.
- Talk to your family and friends about your dog adoption decision. Ensure that everyone is on board, and you have a plan for caring for a dog.
- Gather your supplies. Before bringing your new dog home, ensure you have everything you need, such as food and water bowls, a collar, a leash, a bed, and toys.
- Schedule a veterinary appointment. Take your new dog to the vet for a checkup and necessary vaccinations.
