Believe me, I totally get it. As a teenager myself, I understand how we get caught up in our own problems and feel like the world revolves around us. However, by acknowledging that there is a clear necessity to take action on the issue of sustainability, we can ensure that not only do we become less self-centered but also that we make a lasting impact.
At times, it can feel as if there isn’t much you can do as a teenager and so there isn’t a point in trying to push for a change. You’re definitely not alone. In fact, the Independent UK recently reported that nearly 80% of teens feel pressure to save the planet and advocate for social change, yet don’t know how to do so. Nevertheless, there are clear reasons why it is important for teenagers to take action in order to encourage sustainability.
- We are the future of the world. I know, sounds super cliche, but we are the first step in order to ensure a world that continues to see rapid growth in the future. It may not seem like it but we actually are the main consumer base for a lot of huge businesses that contribute to issues related to sustainability today. Favorite brands like American Eagle, Hollister, PacSun, Shein, and many others can do so much more to encourage sustainability in their companies, and we hold a major influence over a lot of their decisions.
- Sustainability is not just about the climate or being environmentally friendly! I know so many of my friends (and myself!) are really passionate about social issues like combatting a lack of diversity and representation in the media and big brands. Luckily for those of you out there that share similar views, this is part of sustainability too! Encouraging more inclusivity and a sense of community ultimately contributes to sustaining a better workplace or school in the future and continues to promote innovation and sharing of unique perspectives.
- With all the time we spend on social media, we could be making a real change in our communities. Let’s be honest, teenagers pretty much run social media, and whatever we like is what is showcased across the platforms we use. Imagine the change we could create if we began putting more effort into sustainability. On Instagram, support businesses that implement sustainability into their practices and share their products to show larger businesses the change we desire. Additionally, by doing this, we support and incentivize the thousands of small business owners trying to make a change!
