FIFA World Cup Recap: a Look Back at the Biggest Upsets at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups

The FIFA World Cup has been known to produce some of the most memorable moments and some that soccer fans would rather be forget. Qatar 2022, still in its early stages, has produced two such moments in the space of a few days.

First, it was Argentina’s shock defeat at the hands of Saudi Arabia, followed by Germany’s loss to Japan. Lionel Scaloni’s men were deemed one of the top two favorites to win the tournament according to World Cup odds on FanDuel. Most soccer fans expected a resounding opening game victory against Saudi Arabia, which was the 2nd lowest-ranked team in the competition.

The Albiceleste looked to be coasting to victory after a quick start to the game. Seven-time Ballon D’or winner Lionel Messi gave the South Americans the lead from the penalty spot in the tenth minute before three Argentinian goals were disallowed for narrow-margin offsides in the first 45 minutes.

However, Saudi Arabia had a different script in mind in the second half, with two quick goals from Al Sherhi and Al Dawsari in front of a sold-out crowd at the Lusail Stadium. Nevertheless, the Arabs were able to withstand Argentina’s pressure in the second half, clinching all three points to sit atop Group C.

Japan seemed to have read from the same script as two days later, as they handed four-time world champions (Germany) a big blow. Like Argentina, the Germans took the lead thanks to a first-half penalty converted by Ikay Gundogan and dominated the first half. But Japan scored two goals late in the second half to steal all three points in a dicey group.

Saudi Arabia and Japan’s wins had the soccer world in a frenzy, but the World Cup is no stranger to such shocking results. Here, we look back at the biggest upsets of the past two World Cup tournaments.

Germany 0-2 South Korea: Russia 2018

Defending champions Germany entered Russia in 2018 as one of the favorites. The Europeans were part of last four dominant teams in World Cup since 2002 and reached the quarterfinals of every World Cup tournament since 1938.

Although viewed as heavy favorites to top Group F, the Germans found themselves in a must-win situation against a South Korean side that had already been knocked out of the competition. Unfortunately, Germany became the latest victim of the World Cup curse, losing 2-0 to a relentless South Korean team.

Italy 0-1 Costa Rica: Brazil 2014

Italy was seeking to reclaim their glorious status as one of soccer’s finest nations at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The four-time champions were tipped as one of the favorites to win the World Cup after finishing as runners-up in Euro 2012.

The Italians found themselves in a tough group alongside England, Uruguay, and Costa Rica, but given their squad, many expected them to progress. A strong 2-1 start against England meant Italy only needed to win the next game to qualify for the next round. Although Costa Rica had defeated Uruguay in their opening match, many still viewed them as underdogs against the 2006 World Champions.

But the outcome left everyone in shock as Costa Rica earned a spot in the knockout round with a 1-0 win over the Italians.
