National Nonprofit Petco Love Invests in Harris County Pets To Improve the Lives of Pets in Unincorporated Harris County

The $95,000 grant will be celebrated at a local Petco on July 28, 2022

Harris County Pets is set to receive a $95,000 grant investment from national nonprofit Petco Love during a special celebration at the Petco store at 10245 North Freeway, Suite 150, in Houston, Texas on July 28, 2022, at 11 a.m. in support of their lifesaving work for animals in Harris County.

Petco Love is a national nonprofit leading change for pets by harnessing the power of love to make communities and pet families closer, stronger, and healthier. Since its founding in 1999, Petco Love has invested $330 million in adoption and other lifesaving efforts. And Petco Love helps find loving homes for pets in partnership with Petco and more than 4,000 organizations — like ours — across North America, with 6.5 million pets adopted and counting.

“Our investment in Harris County Pets is part of more than $15M in investments recently announced by Petco Love to power local organizations across the country as part of our commitment to create a future in which no pet is unnecessarily euthanized,” said Susanne Kogut, president of Petco Love. “Our local investments are only part of our strategy to empower animal lovers to drive lifesaving change right alongside us. We recently celebrated the one-year launch anniversary of Petco Love Lost, a national lost and found database that uses pet facial recognition technology to simplify the search for lost pets.”

“The $95,000 grant from Petco Love will help support our mission to find homes for homeless pets and empower our staff with much-needed resources to make this possible,” said Max Vigilant, PhD, MPH, Interim Director at Harris County Pets. “We are truly grateful to Petco Love for continuing their support of our pets and Harris County through this grant.”

Harris County Pets is an open admission municipal animal shelter that focuses on finding loving homes for homeless animals.

Since 2019, Harris County Pets has maintained an annual live release rate above 90 percent. (Live release rate, or save rate, is the total percentage of healthy animals that leave a shelter alive.) The Harris County Pets Resource Center opened in 2020 with a capacity to accommodate up to 350 adoptable animals and provides a safe haven for homeless pets.

Since January 1, 2020, Harris County Pets has achieved:

  • Over 13,000 adoptions
  • Over 5,500 fostered animals
  • Over 11,000 animals transported to other states or pulled by rescue groups
  • Over 4,700 animals returned to their owner
  • Over 800 animals received resources to prevent surrender
