NAM Still Serving At Near Pandemic-High Level

Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM) continues to serve neighbors in need at nearly the same level as during the height of the pandemic.

Inflation is hitting families still struggling to recover from the pandemic hard, and they are turning to NAM for help. Eviction rates are now at their highest since the pandemic. Data from a tracking project by Eviction Lab shows the top eviction hotspots in the Houston-Galveston region are within NAM’s service area. Families are not able to stretch the few dollars they have far enough, and NAM is currently serving 50-60 families a day with food and rental assistance.

NAM’s Meals on Wheels (MOW) program resumed its daily meal deliveries earlier this month, with more than 900 seniors relying on NAM and MOW to provide meals and groceries, which requires over 220 volunteers each week. By supporting their nutritional needs and providing a daily check on well-being, MOW helps seniors remain healthy and independent for as long as possible.

In addition, the Young at Heart Café reopened in April, serving hot meals for seniors on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Space is limited, so dining reservations are required. The Young at Heart Center is also now once again offering in-person activities for seniors, including bingo, bridge, exercise classes, educational seminars and more.

Northwest Assistance Ministries is a non-profit, community-based social service agency that strives to meet basic human needs through Neighbors Helping Neighbors. NAM provides assistance in areas such as food, shelter, health, education and domestic violence awareness and intervention. During its last fiscal year, NAM touched the lives of more than 136,000 people through its many programs and services.
