Terror struck in Texas Tuesday as 19 elementary school students and two adults were killed when a gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School in the small town of Uvalde, about 90 minutes west of San Antonio. The 18-year-old gunman, killed by law enforcement officials on the scene, had earlier shot his own grandmother before storming the school; she remains in critical condition. The teenager had recently legally purchased two assault rifles, posting pictures of them on Instagram, that are thought to have been used in the school shooting.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott released a statement that said in part: “Texans across the state are grieving for the victims of this senseless crime and for the community of Uvalde. Cecilia and I mourn this horrific loss and we urge all Texans to come together to show our unwavering support to all who are suffering.”
Lifelong Texas resident Richard Battle shared the podium with Governor Abbott earlier this month at the state prayer breakfast in Austin during the National Day of Prayer. Richard Battle is the award-winning author of eight books including “Surviving Grief with God’s Grace”, which was recognized by ‘Reader’s Digest’ in its inspirational category. The book details Richard’s loss of his first and then only child, his son John. It is a story of the grief, spiritual quest and grace that helped Richard and his family survive that loss, and to live with hope for the future. Richard has pledged to donate copies of his book to each of the families in Uvalde affected by this senseless tragedy.
