Teens Earn Volunteer-Service Hours At Libraries’ Ya Advisory Councils

Fort Bend County Libraries offers programs specifically designed for high school-aged teens entering grades 9 through 12. The programs provide fun and challenging opportunities for these young adults, who are also encouraged to become active participants in designing and orchestrating new activities for teens in the library system.

Teens can earn volunteer-service hours by participating in FBCL’s Young Adult Advisory Councils, where they can express ideas, help organize upcoming activities, and suggest new programs and books that would be of interest to teens at the library.

 The June schedule of Young Adult Advisory Council meetings is as follows:

  • Mission Bend Branch Library– Tuesday, June 14, 4:00 pm, Meeting Room.
  • George Memorial Library(Richmond) — Wednesday, June 15, 4:00-5:00 pm, Room 2B.
  • Cinco Ranch Branch Library– Wednesday, June 15, 4:00-5:00 pm, Conference Room.
  • Sienna Branch Library— Thursday, June 23, 4:00-5:00 pm, Conference Room 2A.
  • Missouri City Branch Library— Tuesday, June 28, 4:00-5:00 pm, Meeting Room.

In addition to the Young Adult Advisory Council meetings, Fort Bend County Libraries will offer the following Young Adult (YA) book clubs and other programs for the teen community.

  • George Memorial Library (Richmond):YA Book Club – Wednesday, June 8, 4:00-5:00 pm, Room 2B. This month, readers will discuss Frankly in Love, written by David Yoon. This title is available in print and digitally as an ebook on OverDrive; call George Memorial Library to check availability of additional print copies.
  • Sienna Branch Library: Sienna Subtext: Graphic Novel & Animé Club— Thursday, June 9, 4:00-5:00 pm, Conference Room 2A. Readers of all ages who enjoy animé, manga, illustrated novels, and comic books are invited to join this book club specifically for graphic-novel enthusiasts. The focus will alternate each month between viewing and discussing animé/manga and reading and discussing graphic novels. For the June meeting, participants will watch a classic/modern animé.
  • George Memorial Library (Richmond): Heavy Inks Graphic Novels Book Club— Saturday, June 18, 11:00 am-12:00 noon, Room 2B. The book to be discussed is All-Star Superman, created by Grant Morrison. This title is available in print; call George Memorial Library to check on availability of additional print copies.
  • Cinco Ranch Branch Library:YA Book Club – Wednesday, June 22, 4:00-5:00 pm. Conference Classroom. This month, readers will discuss Kids of Appetite, written by David Arnold. This title is available in print; call the library to check availability of additional print copies.

Game & Craft Days for Young Adults

  • Movie Day– Thursday, June 2, 2:00-4:00 pm, University Branch Library, 14010 University Blvd, Sugar Land.

Watch a classic summer film from the 1970s in which a shark terrorizes a small beach town. This film is rated PG.

  • Board-Game Club– Wednesdays, June 8 and 22, 3:30-4:30 pm, Sugar Land Branch Library, 550 Eldridge. Learn the basics of new classic board games and niche titles.
  • Dungeons & Dragons” – Saturday, June 11, 2:00-4:00 pm, First Colony Branch Library, 2121 Austin Parkway, Sugar Land.

Teens aged 13 and up who are fans of the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy, tabletop, role-playing game, are invited to stretch their imaginations and practice their problem-solving skills while meeting and socializing with others who enjoy role-playing games. All experience levels are welcome. Dice and character sheets will be provided. Registration is required.

  • Teen Tuesdays: Sip & Paint Animé” – Tuesday, June 14, 4:00-5:30 pm, Missouri City Branch Library, 1530 Texas Parkway.

Teens will enjoy a themed beverage, a movie, and a chance to color gigantic animé. Registration required.

  • “Intro to Guitar”– Wednesday, June 15, 3:30-4:00 pm, Sugar Land Branch Library, 550 Eldridge.

Library staff member Adam Kiskinis will provide an overview of guitar playing, including the anatomy of a guitar, chord structures, finger placement on the guitar fretboard, and tuning a guitar. Learn about online resources that are helpful for beginners. It is recommended that participants bring their own guitar, if possible. All experience levels are welcome to attend.

  • YA Craft – “Paper-Bead Jewelry”– Thursday, June 16, 2:00 pm, University Branch Library, 14010 University Blvd, Sugar Land.

Teens will learn how to use paper and glue to create beads, which can be used for a necklace, bracelet, or key chain.

  • Blackout Poetry” – Thursday, June 16, 4:00-5:30 pm, Sienna Branch Library, 8411 Sienna Springs, Missouri City.

Create a poetic masterpiece by redacting words rather than writing them! Using markers and recycled book pages, create a poem and then illustrate it with drawings or other decorations to increase the visual impact. Materials are provided courtesy of the Friends of the Sienna Branch Library.

  • YA Bob Ross Painting Class” – Friday, June 24, 2:30-4:00 pm, Mission Bend Branch Library, 8421 Addicks Clodine Road.

Bob Ross is known for his paintings that always had an outdoor theme and “happy little trees.” In this tutorial, learn how to paint Bob Ross’s “Purple Splendor.” Paint and paint brushes will be provided, but students should bring their own 16”x20” canvas. Registration required.
