Sen. Cruz Issues Statement on Venezuela’s Release of Two U.S. Citizens

Senator Ted Cruz

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today issued the following statement upon the news that U.S. citizens, Gustavo Cardenas and Jorge Alberto, were released after being detained in Venezuela since 2017:

“I’m very glad to hear of the release of Gustavo Cardenas and Jorge Alberto Fernández. They were unjustly held captive by the Venezuelan government, and have endured a nightmarish journey.

“The regime must immediately release the remaining, unjustly detained Americans—including the rest of the CITGO 6—so they can return home to their families in the United States.

“I’ve met the members of the CITGO 6 families many times, and I’ve heard haunting accounts of what has happened to their loved ones, as well as the physical toll it has taken them.”
