The Lone Star State is famous for a lot of great things: BBQ, music, football, the Alamo, and scorching heat, to name a few. And although skiing might not immediately come to mind when you think of Texas, it probably should.
Some of the best winter athletes in the world learn their craft and train in Texas. In fact, Texas is home to some great skiing opportunities. You just have to know where to look.
Where Can You Ski in Texas?
Since Texas has a warmer climate that doesn’t accumulate much snow, natural snow resorts are hard to come by. However, skiers are a resourceful group, and where there’s a will, there’s a way. Check out these locations to get your skiing yayas out:
- The Grand Alps Resort Group in Addison, TX. This facility boasts a 1,100’ long, 300’ tall indoor ski run. Some indoor winter resorts add chemicals to their powder, but The Grand Alps uses 100% water. There’s even a hotel, a family snow play area, and some great eats for when you need a quick break from your favorite winter sport.
- Aggie in College Station, TX. Want to cool down on a ski slope in the scorching Texas sun? Head over to Texas A&M University’s Mt. Aggie. It’s a manmade, 130’ slope built for students to learn to ski. And it’s open to the public on certain days!
- Alpine Heights Ski Resort in Alpine, TX. Take a day trip or stay a while in Alpine. This community sits at about 4500’ elevation, which makes for a pleasant temperature year-round. After shredding “A” Mountain, have a night on the town to see everything that Alpine has to offer.
If you’re looking for a skiing experience that doesn’t involve bundling up in winterwear, Texas has loads of lake resorts with waterskiing opportunities. You can always book a trip to a snowier state when you’re ready!
Where Do Texans Go to Ski?
Most people who live in cooler climates like to visit warm places like Texas during the winter. But Texans sometimes want to escape their heat too cool off and see some snow! It might sound odd, but many people who hail from Texas are actually snowbirds. In fact, seven Texans participated in the 2022 Beijing Olympics!
So, where do Texans go to get their ski on? Generally, they trek to resorts in Colorado and Utah. Many of these places are a quick flight or a fun road trip away. So if you wake up with an itch to hit the slopes, you could hop on a plane and be skiing by lunchtime.
If you want to see the pros do their thing, head up to Copper Mountain, CO where the HomeLight-sponsored US Ski Team trains. After you’ve watched some of the best skiers in the world shred the powder, you can take a free tour, get lost in the snow maze, and try your hand at a different winter activity: tubing.
