Houston History Speaker Series Returns with the History of Black Businesses

The Heritage Society now delivers hybrid programming to expand educational outreach

On Monday, February 21, The Heritage Society will re-launch its Speaker Series and celebrate Black History Month via a lunch-and-learn and Zoom at1100 Bagby Street.

“Our first speaker is Cheryl Cavitt who will be speaking about an iconic business center for Black professionals that was located across the street from us.” The Heritage Society’s executive director, Alison Bell said. The name of the building, Pilgrim Temple, is preserved on a historical marker in Sam Houston Park and Cavitt and her mother are responsible for the installation.

“Cavitt has a mini-museum of memorabilia and photos and much of her content and stories have not been shared with the general public until now,” Bell said. “Cavitt was introduced to us through our board member Martha Whiting-Goddard, one of Reverend Jack Yates great granddaughters.

“We held lunch-and-learns regularly once a month and shifted to offer on-line programming when the pandemic shut down Houston,” The Heritage Society’s board president, Minnette Boesel said. “All of our programming will be in delivered in a hybrid format to meet our objective to serve Greater Houston with cultural and educational content.”

The Heritage Society is also celebrating Black History Tours year-round. Tours are available from Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sundays for reservations made in advance. Tour information is available at https://www.heritagesociety.org/black-history-tours.
