The Houston Symphony has been approved for a $15,000 Grants for Arts Projects award to support two concerts featuring the Symphony’s Artistic Partner, the renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman. The Houston Symphony project is among 1,248 projects across America totaling $28,840,000 that were selected to receive this first round of fiscal year 2022 funding in the Grants for Arts Projects category.
“The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support arts projects like this one from the Houston Symphony that help support the community’s creative economy,” said NEA Acting Chair Ann Eilers. “The Houston Symphony is among the arts organizations nationwide that are using the arts as a source of strength, a path to well-being, and providing access and opportunity for people to connect and find joy through the arts.”
“Our artistic partnership with Itzhak Perlman is fundamental to our commitment to bring the greatest artists in the world to Houston in collaboration with our own world-class Houston Symphony musicians,” said Houston Symphony Executive Director, CEO and holder of the Margaret Alkek Williams Chair, John Mangum. “We are deeply grateful to the NEA for this grant that supports this essential partnership.”
The generous funding from the National Endowment for the Arts will support two appearances by Perlman. On February 13, 2022, audiences will spend an unforgettable afternoon with the reigning virtuoso of violin. In this special multi-media program, Perlman will tell fascinating stories from his life and career, share personal photos from his archives, introduce footage from the Grammy-nominated Itzhak documentary, and perform live onstage with his longtime friend and pianist, Rohan De Silva. Next, May 12-15, 2022, Perlman leads the orchestra in one of the best loved masterpieces of all time—Tchaikovsky’s fiery, fateful Fourth Symphony. Plus, audience members will hear Perlman perform beautiful music of Mozart.
