Katy ISD Seeking Community Input on State Exemptions

For the past five years as a state-designated District of Innovation (DOI), Katy Independent School District has been allowed to exempt certain Texas Education Code provisions to most effectively meet the needs of the students it serves.  Katy ISD is now seeking to renew its District of Innovation designation as well as include additional exemptions.  The current 2017-2022 Katy ISD Local Innovation Plan reflects exemptions for the school start date, teacher certification and the designation of campus behavior coordinators.  The 2022-2027 proposed plan will add the following additional elements to existing exemptions:

  • Operation of Minutes
  • Student Suspension
  • Attendance for Class Credit or Final Grade
  • Excused Absences (Related to College Visits)
  • Compulsory Attendance

“The proposed exemptions will provide the District greater flexibilities in meeting the educational needs and interests of over 88,000 students that we serve,” said Sherri Ashorn, Discipline and SHARS Administrator.

The District is seeking feedback from the community on Katy ISD’s proposed District of Innovation Plan before it is presented to the Board of Trustees next month for review and approval.  Interested individuals can share their input by emailing districtofinnovation@katyisd.org up until 4 p.m. on January 18, 2022.
