Libraries Present Online Demonstrations For Craft & Hobby Enthusiasts

Fort Bend County Libraries will present a series of online, craft- and hobby-themed video demonstrations this month to introduce people to new hobbies and activities, and to give current crafters inspiration and new ideas.

These programs will be online; they will NOT take place in the library. Links to the videos will be posted on FBCL’s online calendar on the designated date, and they can be viewed at any time.

The December schedule is as follows:

  • Virtual: Loom Knitting a Hat – Thursday, December 2 (pre-recorded video)

Loom knitting is a great way for beginning knitters to create beautiful projects, from scarves and hats to shawls and blankets. In this video, library staff will demonstrate how to knit a hat with a circle loom and yarn. Learn basic steps for getting started, changing colors, shaping the hat, and applying finishing touches.

  • Virtual: “Open When” Care Packages – Friday, December 3 (pre-recorded video)

“Open When” care packages are a thoughtful way to stay connected when friends and families are separated by distance. The packages can be created for different occasions (birthdays, anniversaries, or holidays), but they can also be designed for those times when people need… a laugh, motivation, stress relief, an escape from boredom, or a reminder of home. In this program, get ideas for putting together care packages that are simple but meaningful ways to stay in touch and show you care.

  • Virtual: Folded-Book Art: Snowman – Tuesday, December 7 (pre-recorded video)

Library staff will demonstrate how to take an old book and make words and images by folding the pages. No cutting, gluing, or special equipment is needed for this simple craft project. The project is a fun way to re-use old books and give them a new purpose. The resulting piece of art can be a great gift for someone who loves to read. In this video tutorial, participants will learn how to fold book pages into the shape of a snowman.

  • Virtual: Make Your Own Holiday Ornaments– Saturday, December 11 (pre-recorded video)

Library staff will demonstrate how to make a variety of holiday ornaments to adorn one’s Christmas tree. Learn how to make candy canes, snow people, a walnut mouse, and acorn ornaments.

  • Virtual Photography Basics: What Makes This Photograph Great – Monday, December 13 (pre-recorded video)

Learn how to critique amazing photographs by master photographers to gain a better understanding of the elements that make a photo great. This episode will focus on American street photographer Vivian Dorothy Maier.

  • Virtual: Crafts for Every Holiday – Tuesday, December 21 (pre-recorded video)

Learn how to create easy, fun craft projects for the December holidays. Library staff will demonstrate how to make a travel menorah for Hanukkah, flannel trees for Christmas, a unity cup for Kwanzaa, and felt poinsettias for the Yule.

The programs are free and open to the public. The videos can be viewed online on FBCL’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) by clicking on “Classes & Events,” selecting “Virtual Programs,” and finding the programs on the dates indicated.
