Harmony School of Exploration 2nd-Grade Students Publish Virtual Book about February Winter Storm Experience

They may be only in the second grade, but Mrs. Lopez’s ELA class is now published authors. The Harmony School of Exploration students, with the help and leadership of their teacher, have published their first book virtually.

It’s a book of poetry all about the weather! “Weather Wise” – Poetry Project began in February and lasted through April in celebration of National Poetry Month. The students were exposed to different kinds of weather that blended with learning the reading skill of poetry.

Their poetry uses images, sounds, and rhythm to express feelings. This was the perfect time to introduce students to this assignment given what was going on in the weather in February – the 2021 Winter Storm. When the students returned to regular classes, they had a lot of feelings and an eagerness to express their preferred memories of the weather. This poetry project was more than just an activity it helped the students cope with a traumatic experience and devastating losses by remembering better days.

“I am proud to say that we have not lost our sense of excellence, here at Exploration Elementary. This has not been a traditional and easy year. As teachers, we have had to find new creative ways to lead our students towards mastery. This is just one way that we have risen to that expectation via this virtual platform,” said Kennia Lopez, Harmony School of Exploration, 2nd Grade ELA teacher.
