How to protect your business from fraud and scams

Businesses often overlook security in favour of growth, but it can be a costly mistake. Here’s some advice and measures that you can take to protect your business from security breaches and scams.

Be aware

Stay alert and be aware of any potential scam emails or letters that you receive from unknown sources. Be sceptical and think – if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Always expand the email so that you can see the senders address in full. Scam emails are often obvious to spot and contain lots of random numbers and letters.

If the email seems to have come from someone within your office, but it doesn’t sound like them or how they’d normally contact you, go over to their desk and discuss the email. It could be someone pretending to be a colleague or getting lucky by guessing the name of someone you work with correctly and using this to get you to share private information with them.

Provide staff with regular GDPR training

Ensuring that your staff are up to date with any data breach training and know exactly who they can and can’t share information with will result in less room for slip-ups or any information getting into the wrong hands.

Make sure that the training you provide is compliant with government guidelines and that staff have a regular one to one session where they can discuss anything that they might be unsure of.

Regularly test systems and staff

By running a test on the systems in which you use for any way that someone could breach the servers will alert you to any failing areas of a database or website. Running these tests will allow you to make the necessary changes before it’s too late and sensitive information has been leaked.

You can also run phishing tests on your staff by sending out fake scam emails to see if they click on them. This will show you how compliant your staff are and will allow you to sit down and explain the importance of compliance and avoiding scam emails to those who failed the test so that they know for next time.

Manage the risk

If you are concerned that your business might be at risk and there’s the potential of a security breach, its worth getting expert help from a defence and investigations team. These will then be able to guide you with the best options and also help you discreetly manage any issues at hand.

Having non-biased experts that have years’ worth of experience in the field working with your business will be able to help you spot the risks before they happen and resolve any that do.
