Pandemic or Arctic Blast Won’t Stop These Wedding Bells from Ringing on Valentine’s Day

The Heritage Society hosts 32 sold-out express weddings this Valentine’s weekend

A beloved, historical church built in 1891 and downtown tour destination will be transformed for a sold out “Love Is in the Air” express weddings concept from Friday, Feb. 12 to Sunday, Feb. 14. St. John Church’s marriage services for 32 couples will be masked, small, short, and sweet for Valentine’s Day weekend.

“We have all the makings of an exciting Hallmark movie, because love will conquer a pandemic, a marriage license application downturn, and an artic blast this Valentine’s Day weekend.” The Heritage Society’s executive director, Alison Bell said. The Heritage Society sold out of its express wedding packages including champagne and décor starting at $150 for an intimate and safer ceremony size of 10 wedding guests with masks.

“We had more than 125 ceremony requests, and while we would love to be able to accommodate everyone here at our beautiful church, the COVID-19 safety guidelines makes it a challenge,” The Heritage Society’s board president, Minnette Boesel stated. Boesel said that this weekend is a special opportunity but the church is available for rental for weddings and other services throughout the year.

Some notable wedding officiants donating their services this weekend include Justice of the Peace Wanda Adams, former Judge Steven Kirkland, Judge Mark Davidson, as well as Attorney Chris Tritico.

Kirksey Gregg Productions and many of their partners donated their professional services for a romantic and affordable wedding experience. “We are so excited to be a part of continuing a 100-year wedding legacy at St. John Church, especially since so many couples have had to postpone their dreams of having a large wedding.” The Heritage Society’s board member, Kirksey Gregg said. “I would like to thank our generous partners Rexberry Luxury Weddings, The Ballroom at Bayou Place, Heartstrings String Ensemble, Duke Ensell, Charlie Ewing Photography, and Yadira Richards with Marry Us Services who are making the romantic experience possible this weekend.”

“We read that Harris County had a 110% decrease in marriage license applications in 2020 due to the pandemic, said Bell. “We are happy to be part of a ‘love wins’ solution during these unprecedented times and are ready to celebrate this romantic holiday weekend.”

More about The Heritage Society: The Heritage Society’s park grounds and museum tell the stories of the diverse history of Houston and Texas through collections, exhibits, educational programs, film, video, and now online content. Founded in 1954 by a number of public-spirited Houstonians to rescue the 1847 Kellum-Noble House from demolition, The Heritage Society has since saved an additional nine historic buildings, moved them from various locations to join the Kellum-Noble House in Sam Houston Park, and restored them to reflect their respective eras. These 10 buildings, along with the museum gallery, serve as historic reference points and exhibition spaces for more than 23,000 artifacts that document life in Houston from the early 1800s to the mid- 1900s.
