Moonshot Compost Moves To New, Larger Location

Principal Chris Wood receives industry certification as a TRUE advisor

Moonshot Compost, a company specializing in food waste diversion, has relocated to new, larger headquarters in the Houston Heights at 1001 West 18th Street, Houston, 77008. The move allows for growth and expansion as Moonshot Compost brings on additional commercial and resident clients who want more sustainable solutions to dealing with kitchen food waste.

Previously, the company was located in downtown Houston. The new headquarters, with 1,500 square feet of space, serves as a home base that allows Moonshot Compost to keep its office and operations housed under one roof.

“Although we started our company during the pandemic last year, we are very encouraged by the reception of Houstonians to incorporating composting into their daily routines,” says Moonshot co-president Joe Villa. “Our new, centrally-located headquarters will enable us to work more efficiently and provide the best possible service to our current and future clientele.”

Moonshot is the brainchild of entrepreneurs and brothers-in-law Chris Wood and Villa, who left jobs in the corporate world to start a company that could answer the question: “Why hasn’t food waste recycling happened in Houston?” With more than seven million residents and countless businesses in the Houston metropolitan area, they determined there was a viable market for composting services like other urban centers, including Seattle and Denver.

In addition to residential clients in single and multi-family housing, Moonshot Compost now serves commercial customers. These include ConocoPhillips, Henderson & Kane, Ostia Restaurant, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, Rice University, Houston Baptist University, St. John’s School and Annunciation Orthodox School.

Wood was recently awarded TRUE Advisor Certification, which means he is versed in the most current zero waste business principles and demonstrates a clear commitment to professional growth in advancing TRUE values. The certificate program, part of the nonprofit Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) which does LEED certification, provides a comprehensive curriculum for the individual who wants to learn about zero waste policies and programs and to help projects participating in TRUE certification.

“By going through this certification process, I’m more committed than ever to advancing zero waste in the environment,” says Wood. “Our company believes in doing our part to mitigate climate change.”

“Landfills consist of up to 40 percent food waste, which release unhealthy levels of methane into the air,” continues Wood. “Composting provides the option to keep food out of the trash and eventually back into the earth, which is where we come in. After we collect the food waste in special bins, it goes to a composting facility and ultimately is returned to the client or to a community garden to help grow healthy plants or vegetables.”

Moonshot is a member of the U.S. Composting Council, which advances compost manufacturing, compost utilization and organics recycling to benefit its members, society and the environment.
