Libraries Present Online Demonstrations For Craft & Hobby Enthusiasts

Fort Bend County Libraries will present a series of online, craft- and hobby-themed video demonstrations to introduce people to new hobbies and activities, and to give current crafters inspiration and new ideas.

Because of social-distancing recommendations, Fort Bend County Libraries will offer virtual craft and hobby activities online this winter, so that they can be viewed from the comfort and safety of home.

These demonstration videos can be viewed by selecting “Virtual Programs” on the “Classes and Events” tab on the Fort Bend County Libraries website – www.fortbend.lib.tx.us – and finding the programs on the dates listed. The February schedule is as follows:

  • DIY Birdhouse & Bird Food” – Wednesday, February 3 (pre-recorded video)

In recognition of National Bird-Feeding Month, library staff will demonstrate how to build a milk-carton birdhouse and make simple birdseed cookies. Filling a bird feeder and watching the birds is one of the easiest ways to enjoy wildlife without leaving home!

  • Craft Corner” – Thursday, February 4, 4:30 pm.

In this livestreamed Webex event, people of all experience levels – from beginners to advanced – who enjoy any type of crafting are invited to attend to get other crafters’ perspectives, critiques, and suggestions. Chat and network with other crafters who enjoy anything from art and needlework to woodwork and much more! Registration is required; a link to the Webex session will be emailed to all who register.

  • · “Photography Basics: What Makes This Photograph Great” – Monday, February 15 (pre-recorded video)

Learn how to critique amazing photographs by master photographers to gain a better understanding of the elements that make a photo great. This episode will focus on works by prominent African-American photographer and filmmaker Gordon Parks.

  • Homemade Flower Crowns” – Thursday, February 18 (pre-recorded video)

Learn how to make a flower-garland crown using floral tape, craft wire, pliable twine, and real or artificial flowers.

  • Pom-Pom Paper Clips” – Thursday, February 18 (pre-recorded video)

Liven up the workspace with colorfully decorated paper clips. A limited number of craft kits will be available for pick up at the First Colony Branch Library.

  • “Felt Owl Magnet” – Tuesday, February 23 (pre-recorded video)
  • Making a Shell-Bowl Planter” – Thursday, February 25 (pre-recorded video)

In this video tutorial, library staff show how to use glue, sea shells, a rock, and a pair of pliers to make a shell-bowl planter for succulents or air plants.

  • Pop-Art Painting” – Friday, February 26 (pre-recorded video)

In this video tutorial, learn how to create a pop-art masterpiece by tracing sections and painting in details.

The sessions are free and open to the public. Registration is required for the livestreamed Webex events ONLY; a link to the Webex session will be emailed to participants who register.
