Do’s and Don’ts When Betting on Horse Racing

Betting can be a tough gig even for experienced gamblers, never mind if you are a beginner new to the sports betting game. It can be even more tough when you are betting on horse racing so you should take advantage of tips for every day. This historic sport is known for its open and unpredictable nature compared with other mainstream sports. When it comes to betting on horse racing there are a few tricks of the trade that you can use to make your experience that little bit better, and give yourself a much better chance of picking a winner! Along with this there are certainly other things that you should almost certainly avoid. So without further ado let’s have a look and the do’s and don’ts when betting on horse racing.

Do’s –

Check odds:

Knowing how odds work is imperative to starting your bet selection off right. Not only should you look to shop around for the best odds at the best bookies but it is also so important to assess the odds and make the decision if you are getting bang for your buck. After all there is little point in a bet that always has a risk and has a minimal return of winnings. Look to mix it up between favourites and outsiders. Yes, outsiders are aptly named as such because the bookies think they have less chance of winning but statistically the favourite only wins one third of the time. Knowing your odds and the reasons surrounding these odds is so important before you go ahead and stick a wager on.

Think about each way:

Considering alternative selection on your bet slip is always a good shout. With any sports betting market, horse racing has a crazy amount of different bets that you can put on. One section of the market is something we would recommend for any sort of horse racing bet that you are considering putting on. Each Way betting is a selection type that means you sacrifice a percentage of your winnings but retain a winning selection if your horse places in the top 3 in the race. Whilst you suffer a loss of profits you still retain a winning bet and at the very least take home something. We would always suggest thinking about this fairly unique betting option when it comes to betting on horse racing.

Research:

The biggest do on our list is undoubtedly this one. It doesn’t matter what sport you are betting on, this should be done. Researching your bet is imperative if you want to win, wing big or win consistently. Knowing your selection and why exactly you have it on is not fool proof by any means, after all it is a gamble you are taking, but it certainly adds a much more sound platform on which to profit from. You can either let someone else do the cars work for you – there are hundreds of free online tipsters now who offer their services. Or alternatively, do the graft yourself. This will require studying form, recent race history, using race cards and parade rings and knowing the sport and your horses inside and out before making an adequate selection on your bet slip. Knowledge is power – this is especially true when betting on horse racing.

Don’ts –

Rely on luck:

Whilst there is always a chance of losing when you do research, there is more of a chance of losing if you leave your betting selection up to luck or a random punt. Indeed, luck may take you a few steps but your luck is inevitably going to run out. Don’t rely on it.

Follow big odds or accas:

It is common within other sports to look at combining big coupons or accumulators together to gain huge odds from relatively small bets. Whilst this is – at the best of times – ineffective, it offers a chance at winning big. When it comes to accumulators and big odd betting in horse racing however, it is a big no-no. This sport is known for being outrageously unpredictable. It’s hard enough to grab a treble winner, never mind an 8 fold. Smaller betting with bigger wagers is the key to effective betting on horse racing.

Gamble too much:

As with any kind gambling, remember that it is only meant to be fun and games. Don’t spend too much or let it consume you. Keep it fun. Betting on horses should add a little excitement to races not ruin lives. (add when the fun stops stop)
