The holidays are usually a joyous time for most, but for struggling families it’s a time of stress and frustrations. Due to Covid-19 a lot of families in the inner city are barely getting by, but still want their children to experience the joy and excitement of receiving gifts.
Every year She’s Happy Hair converts each of its seven locations into the North Pole and provide toys and bikes to children in need as well as a picture with Chocolate Santa. This year Christmas traditions are being modified to protect the health of the community during the pandemic. She’s Happy Hair and The She’s Happy Foundation partnered with The Gent Spot Barbershop and Lounge, Comerica Bank, Amegy Bank and Happy Me Tee to provide bags of groceries, clothing and over 1500 toys to individuals that are in need. The goal was to provide children in Houston’s most poverty stricken area’s a little extra hope for the holidays.
Founders Warren Broadnax and Marcus Bowers refused to allow the pandemic to cancel the Christmas giveback. Therefore the group drove around Houston with Chocolate Santa and surprised inner city youth with gifts. The giveback began in front of the Missouri City home that Broadnax grew up and ended at the apartment complex in Sunny Side where Bowers was raised. Bowers stated; “it takes a village and She’s Happy Hair has been that village since we opened our doors in 2012. A lot of our customers are single mom’s and we want them to know that we appreciate them and we are there to be a beacon of hope. Broadnax mentioned “It’s so important to support black-owned businesses right now because we realize the importance of giving back to the communities that spend money in our businesses”.
