Having a new-born baby can be a daunting experience, particularly for first parents with no previous parental experience. Being a parent is a massive responsibility and many individuals feel a lot of pressure knowing they have to take care of another human being and always ensure their safety.

It can be very difficult knowing exactly what your baby needs as it cries and you try everything to calm it down. Babies do not speak, therefore they will not be able to tell you exactly what is wrong and how you can make it better. Many parents find this experience stressful and their confidence as parents and their perceived ability to be a parent significantly decreases in such situations. Empirical research has shown that parenting styles in the first year of life have a significant impact in the development of their future personality and different aspects of their adulthood. In this article, we will advise you of how to know what your new-born needs and how to respond to it.
Attend Parenting Courses
As we mentioned above, being a parent is always a stressful experience. This is often a result of a lack of confidence in yourself and your skills. Attending parenting courses is a great way to ensure that you learn more about being a parent and looking after a child, but it is also a good chance to meet other parents who share the same challenges as you. This will make you realise that you are not alone and most parents go through the same challenges.
Talk to Your Midwife or Health Nurse
If you have any major concerns about your baby’s temperament or how to recognise your baby’s needs, speak with your midwife when you can. They are there to support you through this journey, and they will understand what you are going through and will be able to give you effective advice.
Trust Your Instincts
Believe it or not, no one ever really believes that they are ready to have a child or that they are amazing parents all the time. Although some people have previous experience with looking after children, being a parent truly is a completely different experience. Once you have a baby, you undergo massive changes, not only physically but also mentally. You become more aware of things and you will be surprised at how much you will be able to understand your baby without even realising it. Babies usually have different cries that will mean different things, and you will be able to identify these due to the bond you will have with your child.
What to do When the Baby Will Not Stop Crying?
- Feed it
One of the most obvious reasons for a baby to cry is because it is hungry. Although maternity books often teach you babies have a strict schedule when it comes to feeding times, this is not necessarily true for every baby. It could be that you are not feeding the baby enough or the milk is not providing the baby with enough nutrients – the latter is particularly common for breastfeeding babies.
- Change Nappy
Another evident motive for babies to cry is a dirty nappy – check that this is clean so that they can calm down. Uncomfortable babies will evidently cry and remain unsettled until they are clean.
- Check Clothes
Sometimes it happens that baby’s clothes may wet as fluids transfer from the nappy onto the clothes. And even when the baby’s nappy has been changed, they will still cry. If this is the case, check the baby’s clothes to ensure they are not wet and if they are, change them for clean ones.
- Hold it
After you have checked the baby is clean and fed and is still crying, simply hold it close to you. Babies crave their parents’ warmth and sometimes this is all they need to feel settled.
- Take it Outdoors
If you have ensured all the above is done, and you still cannot keep your baby calm, most parents will tell you that going outside for a walk or a drive works wonders. Experts would suggest investing in a good pram or buggy is a good idea, so that your baby is comfortable when you take it for a walk and is more likely to fall asleep. When it comes to car rides, securing your child is of utmost importance, which is why a baby car seat is necessary whenever you wish to take your kids for a drive. Car seats are also very comfortable for babies, so you can focus on driving without having to worry about your baby being irritated.
- Remain Calm
One of the most important things to do when facing difficult situations as a parent is to remain calm. The way you act will significantly influence your baby, therefore if you are stressed the baby is likely to feel stressed too. Please understand that this is a difficult journey but one that is also full of wonders, it is okay to feel that you are struggling and always seek support if you think you cannot cope.

Hearing your baby crying can be overwhelming when you do not know what to do. Follow some of the advice above so you know what to do, but most importantly, believe in your own ability to be a good parent.
