Libraries Present Online Demonstrations For Craft & Hobby Enthusiasts

Fort Bend County Libraries will present a series of online, craft- and hobby-themed video demonstrations to introduce people to new hobbies and activities, and to give current crafters inspiration and new ideas.

Because of social-distancing recommendations, Fort Bend County Libraries will offer virtual craft and hobby activities online this fall, so that they can be viewed from the comfort and safety of home.

These demonstration videos can be viewed by selecting “Virtual Programs” on the “Classes and Events” tab on the Fort Bend County Libraries website – www.fortbend.lib.tx.us – and finding the programs on the dates listed.

The December schedule is as follows:

  • DIY Candy-Cane Wreaths” – Tuesday, December 1 (pre-recorded video)

Get creative ideas for using candy canes to decorate for the holiday season. In this DIY tutorial, learn how to make a holiday wreath with candy canes.

·       “Mason-Jar Challenge: Spa-in-a-Jar” — Tuesday, December 1 (pre-recorded video)

Learn how to create and customize a relaxing bubble-bath spa-in-a-jar. A link to the video will be posted on FBCL’s online calendar on the designated date, and it can be viewed at any time.

·       “Book, Humbug!” — Wednesday, December 2 (pre-recorded video)

Considered one of the great novelists of the Victorian era, Charles Dickens authored books that were witty, sometimes humorous while other times dark, and often revealed societal truths. Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is sometimes credited with revitalizing England’s Christmas traditions and overall attitude to the holiday. In this video, library staff will read an excerpt from this holiday classic before demonstrating how to make a Victorian Christmas-tree ornament and a Victorian fan. A link to the video will be posted on FBCL’s online calendar on the designated date, and it can be viewed at any time.

·       “Create Christmas Ornaments with Heirloom Photos” – Monday, December 7,

(pre-recorded video). Carol Beauchamp, from FBCL’s Genealogy and Local History department, will demonstrate how to use canning lids and heirloom photos to make simple Christmas ornaments that also preserve memories.

  • Holiday Book Art: Christmas Tree” – Saturday, December 12 (pre-recorded video)

In this video tutorial, learn how to recycle old books into creative works of art. Library staff will demonstrate how to take an old book and make a tree by folding the pages. No cutting, gluing, or special equipment is needed for this simple craft project. The project is a fun way to re-use old books and give them a new purpose. The resulting piece of art can be a great gift for someone who loves to read.

In this craft-demonstration video, library staff will show how to make birdseed ornaments using a few basic materials.

  • YA: Newspaper Pottery” – Thursday, December 17 (pre-recorded video)

In this craft demonstration video, learn how to transform old newspapers into colorful  pottery bowls and pots.

  • Flowers with Flair” – Friday, December 18 (pre-recorded video)

In this video tutorial, library staff will demonstrate how to create beautiful flowers from wire and then paint them with gleaming nail polish to make the colors pop! Once dry, the flowers become unique works of art that can later be used to make jewelry.

  • Winter Felt Planner Clips” – Tuesday, December 22 (pre-recorded video)

In this video tutorial, learn how to make a felt planner clip with a winter theme.

  • New Year’s Bullet Journaling” – Monday, December 28 (pre-recorded video)

In this video tutorial, discover how bullet journaling can be used to promote mindfulness and productivity. Start the New Year with a creative, positive attitude with these fun, original spreads and layouts!

The sessions are free and open to the public. Registration is required for the livestreamed Zoom/WebEx events ONLY; a link to the Zoom/WebEx session will be emailed to participants who register.
