Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston holds “Lemonade Day” to promote entrepreneurship and financial education

Founder Michael Holthouse attended event that earned $385 after expenses

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston, (BGCGH) in conjunction with the Lemonade Day nonprofit organization, held “Lemonade Day” to promote entrepreneurship among young people and to teach financial education. The event was held at the Holthouse Club on Canal Street in Houston’s East End with special guest Michael Holthouse, a successful business and philanthropist, BGCGH board member and founder of Lemonade Day in 2007.

More than 10 Club members set up shop under tents at the Club, selling two types of lemonade – “Soaring Rocket” and “Sour Power” – for $1.50 each. These flavors were named in honor of the Houston Rockets, a long-time partner of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston. The lemonade sales netted $385, which will be used to put on an international festival to celebrate various cultures represented at the Club and around the world.

Volunteers handled the money exchange and delivered the individually wrapped cups of lemonade on a tray to each car to adhere to best practices during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Joining in the fun on a warm, sunny afternoon were mascots Lemmy from Lemonade Day and Blue from BGCGH.

“The partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs is a great way for us to connect with kids all across the region,” says Holthouse. “I’m passionate about youth learning how to take charge of their future and put plans into action that help them succeed. The positive energy I feel from the kids is inspiring.”

Lemonade Day dovetails with BGCGH’s workforce readiness programs. Clubs focus on the development of soft and hard skills that are transferable across industries while creating access to real-life career experiences, and in some cases, place teens in part-time jobs and graduates in valuable careers.

Also attending the event were BGCGH President and CEO Kevin Hattery and Lemonade Day City Director Gaye Jackson, along with staff and volunteers. To learn more about Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston, please visit www.bgcgh.org.
