February 28th, 2020 – As a part of World Spay Day, Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP)’s Feral CatAssistance Program (FCAP) reached out to assist residents of Treemont Retirement Community and Brookdale Willowbrook Place by providing free spay/neuter surgeries and rabies vaccinations to feral cats residing in their neighborhoods.
Launched in 1995, World Spay Day is an annual campaign that aims to encourage people to save the lives of animals by spaying and neutering companion animals and feral cats. Although CAP always promotes spaying and neutering animals by providing free surgeries for feral cats when they are trapped and transported by community volunteers, on this day they focused their efforts on these two assisted living/retirement communities who were deemed as needing the most help within the shortest amount of time. Many of the cats they were caring for were not yet altered, and these two colonies were faced with exploding population numbers within the next 3-4 months as well as increased health risks over the years.
Because feral cats are naturally nocturnal, FCAP Coordinator Daiva Paskauskaite worked diligently for weeks to coordinate dedicated volunteers to work long hours in the dark placing and monitoring traps in order for the felines to be ready for surgery in the morning.
As a result of these efforts, on Tuesday February 25th the CAP Cornelius Clinic provided free spay/neuter and vaccination services to 83 feral cats!
CAP would like to take this opportunity to remind the community of the importance of spaying & neutering feral cat colonies as well as companion animals. The CAP Cornelius Clinic provides low-cost spay/neuter and wellness services to the public, and in partnership with FCAP provides free spay/neuter for feral cats.
