The History of Katy

Katy’s story began with the arrival of the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad, commonly known as the Katy Railroad, during the late 1800s. The railroad transformed the surrounding prairie into a growing agricultural community, with rice farming becoming one of the area’s defining industries.

As Houston expanded westward throughout the twentieth century, Katy evolved from a quiet farming community into one of Texas’ most recognized suburban cities while preserving its historic charm and strong community spirit.

Historic Downtown Katy continues to celebrate the city’s past through museums, preserved buildings, annual festivals, and community events.
