Katy Family Hopes Community Will Rally Around Suzannah in Baby of the Year Competition

by Sheryl Birch – The Katy News

baby wearing purple headband with bowA Katy family is inviting the community to rally around their daughter, Suzannah, whose first year of life has been filled with medical challenges, unexpected setbacks and, ultimately, a lot of reasons to celebrate.

Suzannah is now competing in the 2026 Baby of the Year competition, giving the family an opportunity to share her story while also bringing attention to Baby2Baby, a nonprofit that provides essential items such as diapers, clothing and other necessities to children living in poverty.

Suzannah’s journey began with challenges even before she was born. Her mother, Kelcie, developed preeclampsia during pregnancy and experienced a difficult delivery and recovery. Shortly after bringing Suzannah home, the family learned their daughter had laryngomalacia, a condition affecting the airway, as well as sleep apnea.

For her parents, those early months meant frequent appointments with specialists, testing and the constant worry that comes with watching a baby struggle to breathe.

At just two months old, Suzannah underwent throat surgery to help improve her breathing.

“It was hard to see how small she looked that day,” Kelcie shared, recalling the experience of handing her infant daughter over for surgery and waiting to have her safely back in her arms.

Then, when Suzannah was only six months old, another unexpected challenge confronted the family. Suzannah, Kelcie and her husband were involved in a severe car accident while returning home from a family trip. Their family vehicle, which they had purchased only four months earlier, was totaled.

Although the family was grateful that they were able to walk away from the crash together, the accident created another major setback during an already difficult year.

Through it all, Kelcie says Suzannah has remained a happy presence for her family.

Today, the little girl her parents once watched closely to make sure she was breathing is smiling, thriving and taking part in the 2026 Baby of the Year competition.

The competition’s winner will receive $25,000. For Suzannah’s family, the prize could help them replace the vehicle they lost in the accident. But Kelcie says the opportunity means more to the family than the potential prize.

The competition also benefits Baby2Baby, which works to provide basic necessities to children and families experiencing poverty.

“After a year that has taught us just how quickly life can change,” Kelcie said, “the idea that our daughter’s journey could also help bring attention and support to other babies and families means more to us than simply winning a competition.”

Now, the family hopes members of the Katy community will learn more about Suzannah’s story and the nonprofit benefiting from the competition.
