KATY, TX — The Katy community has a busy weekend ahead, with family activities, local shopping, pet adoptions, outdoor entertainment, back-to-school assistance and live music taking place today, Saturday, August 8, and tomorrow, Sunday, August 9.
The timing is especially important for local families because Katy ISD students return to school Wednesday, August 12. Here is a look at what is happening around Katy this weekend.
Events Taking Place Today — Saturday, August 8
Free Tai Chi at Central Green Park
Residents can begin Saturday with a free outdoor Tai Chi class at Central Green Park.
The class runs from 8:30 to 9 a.m. and is open to participants of all ages and experience levels. Instructor Shi Fu Whit McClendon leads the community program, which focuses on balance, calmness, concentration and general wellness.

Same-Day Pet Adoption Event at Katy Mills
Families interested in welcoming a new pet into their home can visit Katy Mills for a same-day animal adoption event presented with Special Pals.
The event runs from 1 to 4 p.m. near Entry 7 by Slick City at Katy Mills, 5000 Katy Mills Circle. Visitors will have an opportunity to meet animals currently searching for permanent homes.

Learn How to Research Your Family History
The West Houston Area Genealogy Society will present “Unearth Your Story” from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Maud Smith Marks Branch Library.
A society representative will introduce visitors to tools and resources that can help them begin researching their family history and ancestry.

Shop Local at the August KTX Market
More than 25 local vendors and makers are expected at the August KTX Market, taking place from 5 to 9 p.m. at No Label Brewing Co., 5351 First Street in Katy.
The free-entry market will feature handmade goods, clothing, jewelry, home décor, specialty treats, gifts and other products from local businesses. Food, craft beverages and live music will also be available.

“Barbie” Movie Night at Central Green Park
Families can close out Saturday with an outdoor showing of “Barbie” at Central Green Park.
The movie is scheduled from 8 to 9 p.m. at 23501 Cinco Ranch Boulevard. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and movie snacks.

Farmers Market at LaCenterra
The Farmers Market at LaCenterra is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Heritage Square, 23501 Cinco Ranch Boulevard.
Visitors can shop for fresh produce, homemade goods and other products offered by area vendors. The market gives residents another opportunity to meet and support local small-business owners.

Free Back-to-School Community Fair Near Katy
Families needing assistance before classes begin can attend the Back-to-School Community Fair 2026 at Living Word Church, 16607 Clay Road in the Addicks area.
The free event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is expected to include backpacks, free hair trims, health resources, bounce houses and family activities.

Live Blues Music at Katy Vibes
Sympli Lovely will bring an afternoon of live blues music to Katy Vibes beginning at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Tax-Free Shopping Continues Through Sunday Night
The Texas Sales Tax Holiday continues throughout the weekend and ends at midnight Sunday.
Most clothing, footwear, backpacks and qualifying school supplies priced below $100 per item can be purchased without state or local sales tax. Eligible online purchases also qualify when completed during the holiday period.
Computers, software, textbooks, jewelry, handbags and certain athletic equipment are not included. Shipping and handling charges may count toward the total price of an item when determining whether it qualifies.
Watch the Heat and Afternoon Storms
Residents attending outdoor activities should prepare for dangerous summer heat and possible afternoon thunderstorms.
The National Weather Service forecast for Katy calls for a Saturday high near 97 degrees, with heat-index values reaching approximately 105. Sunday’s high is expected to reach 95, with a heat index near 104 and a chance of afternoon thunderstorms.
Bring water, wear lightweight clothing and monitor the weather before traveling to outdoor events.
