June 20-25, 2022
The Skating Club of Houston announces that Texas’ only and first ever competitive Special Olympics Team will be competing in Wichita, KS, June 20-25 2022 in the US National Theatre On Ice Championships.
Theatre On Ice is a form of competitive figure skating that combines the grace of figure skating with the excitement of theatre and dance. Teams constist of between 8 and 24 skaters. The programs are judged by US Figure Skating Judges and are evaluated on technical merit and presentation with emphasis on originality, costuming, artistry and musicality.
There are many levels of competition and Special Olympics is one of the levels. This is such a fabulous and great opportunity for our ice skating Special Olympians. It is a Unified Team sport in that the Special Olympians are guided by mentors who have volunteered to help this team.
We are a non-profit 501c club and all the mentors, coaches, and ice rinks are donating all of their time and practice ice for the development of this team. The skaters, mentors and team staff are all working and practicing out of pocket. We are very fortunate to have so many generous volunteers and sponsors. Our sponsors include Skatetherapy.org, Brazos Valley Figure Skating Club, The Aerodrome, Bellerive Ice Center and Head Coach Shannon Keeler. Most of the operating expenses are covered by these sponsors. Be we need help for the skaters with their travel expenses to Wichita ($15,000) and to help fray the cost of a backdrop for the competition($600).
We would love to invite any press for filming or interviews with our team members. These are our remaing practice times but we would be willing to make an arranged time to meet for an interview.
