Volunteers gift district with nearly 600,000 volunteer hours this school year
Katy ISD’s Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) hosted their annual Volunteer Celebration on April 29th honoring the thousands of school district volunteers who give the gift of their time and talents to Katy ISD students and teachers. This school year volunteers across the district donated nearly 600,000 hours which is valued at $17.9 million according to Independent Sector.
Over 800 volunteers attended the celebration to hear this year’s keynote speaker, Tom Landis, Founder & CEO of Howdy Homemade Ice Cream and his colleagues and Katy ISD alums, Rod Batson, local franchise owner and Austin Hanson, General Manager of Howdy Homemade Katy. District-wide entertainment was provided by Morton Ranch Junior High Jazz Band, Taylor High School Expressions Choir, Cinco Ranch High School Men of Bravo Choir and Cheer and Drill leaders from all nine Katy ISD High Schools.
At the Volunteer Celebration, principals and namesakes from Tom Wilson Elementary, Bill & Cindy Haskett Junior High and O.D. Tompkins High School announced each campus Volunteer of the Year.
