After a 3-2 loss to Cinco Ranch in their District 19-6A opener, the Tompkins Falcons made a decisive statement by overwhelming Katy, 6-0, on Saturday at Legacy Stadium.
The victory pulls the No. 12-ranked Falcons (10-2, 1-1) closer to the top of a hyper-competitive 6A league, which features several ranked teams. According to Tompkins head soccer coach Tom Jones, junior midfielder Luis Lugo scored a pair of second-half goals and contributed two assists.
It was part of a dominant, relentless showing offensively for Tompkins against the Tigers (2-6, 0-2).
Rodrigo Cruz also scored a pair goals, and Falcons Jose Ramos and Ojas Shandilya scored in the first half, along with Cruz, to provide Tompkins with a 3-0 halftime advantage. Lugo found his form for back-to-back goals in the 45th and 51st minutes of the match.
Despite an aggressive play led by Katy’s Kevin Soto, the Tigers spent much of the match playing defensively against the crisp Falcon passing.
Among the top five teams in district play, their overall records combine for just six losses. After Saturday’s play, which included a 2-2 tie between Mayde Creek (3-0-2, 0-1) and No. 36 Cinco Ranch 5-3-2, 1-0-1), only No. 3 Seven Lakes (9-0-0, 2-0) is unbeaten and untied in 19-6A play. No. 17 Taylor (6-1-1, 1-1) dropped its first match, a 1-0 loss to the Seven Lakes Spartans.
On Tuesday, the spotlight game will be Tompkins at Taylor in a 7:30 p.m. showdown. The Spartans face Morton Ranch.
