9:00 am: Libraries Feature Special Online Family Programs In May9:00 am: Libraries Feature Special Online Family Programs In May – Because of the COVID-19 social-distancing recommendations, FBCL is continuing to offer children’s programming virtually, so that families can participate from the comfort and safety of home. Videos of the family programs will be posted on the online Virtual calendar on FBCL’s website on the scheduled date. Families of toddlers and preschoolers may pick up to-go activity packets from the library for the month. These packets contain fun craft activities that can be done at home. Call the libraries to request to pick up the packets through the Curbside Pick-Up service, or visit one of the five FBCL buildings that are open to the public. May 15 – “Yoga + Mindfulness” (pre-recorded video) This program is presented by Kinetic Vibez, in conjunction with Young Audiences of Houston. Kinetic Vibez is an artistic wellness movement that focuses on introducing a holistically creative lifestyle to youth, ages 7 to 19. By fusing yoga, meditation, and hip-hop, students can overcome stress, depression, and bullying. In this online program, students will learn the basics of the yogic system of meditation, which includes guided stretches, guided breathing practices, and guided sound-based meditation. Students will learn how to use these practices to develop a strong sense of mindfulness, increase mental and physical flexibility, and take control of any depression, anxiety, or stress they may be experiencing. May 22 – “Fancy Nancy Tea Party” (pre-recorded video) Watching this program, children can participate at home by dressing in their favorite party clothes while they listen to a “Fancy Nancy” story and enjoy an afternoon tea party. Library staff will demonstrate how to make a fancy wand and crown and offer instructions on how to create “Fancy Nancy” inspired snacks. Children may even pick up some etiquette tips to practice at home! A limited number of craft packets for this activity will be available for pick up at the First Colony Branch Library beginning May 17. Activity sheets may also be downloaded from the online calendar on the FBCL website and printed out at home. This activity is sponsored by the Friends of the First Colony Branch Library. For every 20 books read, the participant’s name will also be written on a picture of a whale or dragon. Drawings for puppets will take place weekly. The names of readers who complete the goal of reading 20 books or more will be entered into a drawing for gift cards -- donated by the Friends of the Library organizations -- from area stores. One winner from each library location will be selected in a drawing that will take place on September 1. Middle School Summer Challenge Area readers in grades 6-8 can participate in the Middle School Summer Challenge by logging online the time they spend reading. Middle School youth who read for 600 minutes (10 hours) will receive a color-changing cup. Participants who read for 1200 minutes (20 hours) will receive their choice of a reading trophy or a mystery prize. The names of participants who complete 20 hours of reading will be entered into a drawing for a $25 gift card -- donated by the Friends of the library -- that will be awarded to a lucky reader at each branch library in a drawing that will take place on September 1. YA/Adult Summer Reading Challenge Adults of all ages, including young adults in high school, may participate in the YA/Adult SRC by logging online the time they spend reading. 10:00 am: Law Library’s “Pro Se Basics” Series Introduces Free Legal Info Resources Online10:00 am: Law Library’s “Pro Se Basics” Series Introduces Free Legal Info Resources Online – The introductory classes will take place on Tuesdays June 1, 8, 15, and 22, from 10:00 to 11:00 am. The classes will introduce important procedural information for self-represented litigants who wish to begin their legal research, represent themselves in court, or seek resources for their Family Law or Probate issues. Individuals may choose to attend individual sessions or the whole series. The material that will be discussed is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for the advice of an attorney. Librarians cannot provide legal advice or recommend specific forms. June 1– “Introduction to Legal Research.” This class will introduce the basics of legal research. Those attending will gain a better understanding of the difference between primary and secondary resources, how to read legal citations, and where to find legal resources in print and online. June 8– “Advanced Legal Research.” This class covers search strategies using the libraries’ databases. Learn how to use Boolean operators, natural language, and special characters to narrow searches. In addition, the class will demonstrate how to begin a simple search and how to narrow searches. June 15– “Courthouse 101.” Self-represented litigants will get a basic introduction to the legal system. Learn about the difference between civil and criminal cases, the basic parts of a legal document, the different types of legal documents, and where to file legal documents. Gain a better understanding of the differences between district courts, county courts, and justice of the peace courts, learn how they interact with each other, and how individuals might be involved with the courts. June 22-- “Probate 101.” Learn about the resources that are available in the Law Library for probate cases, as well as free online resources. Get tips on using the library’s catalog to find resources throughout the library system, and hear about the library’s online databases that can be accessed from home. 3:00 pm: Libraries Host Online Game Of “A Fake Artist Goes To New York” For Adults3:00 pm: Libraries Host Online Game Of “A Fake Artist Goes To New York” For Adults – “A Fake Artist Goes to New York” is a hidden-role game that is centered around a collaborative drawing. In the game, all but one player – the “fake artist” – knows what the drawing prompt is. The fake artist has to be convincing enough to trick the real artists into thinking he/she knows the prompt, and the real artists have to be subtle enough to keep the fake artist from guessing the prompt. Points are awarded to players who successfully carry out their parts. 4:30 pm: Libraries Present Online Demonstrations For Craft & Hobby Enthusiasts4:30 pm: Libraries Present Online Demonstrations For Craft & Hobby Enthusiasts – Fort Bend County Libraries will offer virtual craft and hobby activities online this summer, so that they can be viewed from the comfort of home. These demonstration videos can be viewed by selecting “Virtual Programs” on the “Classes and Events” tab on the Fort Bend County Libraries website – www.fortbend.lib.tx.us – and finding the programs on the dates listed. The June schedule is as follows: “Craft Corner” – Thursday, June 3, 4:30 pm (live-streamed) In this live-streamed Webex event, people of all experience levels – from beginners to advanced – who enjoy any type of crafting are invited to attend to get other crafters’ perspectives, critiques, and suggestions. Chat and network with other crafters who enjoy anything from art and needlework to woodwork and much more! Registration is required; a link to the Webex session will be emailed to all who register. “Photography Basics: What Makes This Photograph Great” – Monday, June 14 (pre-recorded video) Learn how to critique amazing photographs by master photographers to gain a better understanding of the elements that make a photo great. This episode will focus on “The Joshua Tree,” a photograph by Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn. A link to the video will be posted on FBCL’s online calendar on the designated date, and it can be viewed at any time. “DIY Tiered Stand”– Tuesday, June 15 (pre-recorded video) Create a tiered stand that can be used as an organizer in the kitchen or bathroom, as a plant stand, or for party trays. The stand can be customized to match any style or décor. Materials needed include: clothespins, wood stain, stove-burner covers, candlestick (or other options for the base), permanent craft glue, and ribbon/twine. 9:00 am: FBCL Announces Re-Opening Of More Libraries On June 49:00 am: FBCL Announces Re-Opening Of More Libraries On June 4 – The Albert George Branch (9230 Gene St, Needville) will be receiving upgraded shelving in June and will re-open at a later date. Curbside pick-up service at this location will be available through June 26, but will not be available once the upgrades begin. With the re-opening of the additional libraries on June 4, library services will resume as they were before March 2020.
Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Per the governor’s recent executive order, masks will no longer be required. Programming and events for children, teens, and adults will remain online and in virtual formats so that patrons may enjoy them from the comfort of home. The hours for all locations are as follows:
The Books & More Curbside Pick-Up service will continue to be available at all locations. Please pick up items no later than 15 minutes prior to closing.
