10:15 am: Children’s Summer Schedule Of Activities At Cinco Ranch Branch Library

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library, 2620 Commercial Center Boulevard in Katy, presents a variety of free children’s programs in July. Families with children of all ages are invited to join in the fun and earn rewards through FBCL’s Summer Reading Challenge!

Craft packets will be given out at the end of each program, so that children may take them home to enjoy.

Family Story Time takes place on Wednesdays and Thursdays, beginning at 10:15 and 11:30 am, in the Meeting Room. Families with children of all ages will enjoy stories, songs, and action rhymes. Programs dates are July 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, and 28.

 Pajama Night Story Time – 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at 6:00 pm -- gives families an evening option for the activities presented during the daytime.  Program dates are July 5 and 19.

The School-Age Programs -- crafts, stories, and more for school-aged children entering grades 1 through 5 ONLY -- begin at 2:00 and 3:00 pm every Wednesday during the summer. Seating is limited; free tickets are required for admission and are available one hour before the activity. The July schedule is as follows:

July 6 – The Aztec Princess (presented by Express Children’s Theatre)

July 13 – The Adventures of the Real Pecos Bill

July 20 – Aquarium: A Marine Micro Ballet

July 27 – Craft Carnival

 The Middle School Programs, which begin at 3:00 pm every other Thursday in the summer, are designed for youth in grades 6 through 8. The July schedule is as follows:

July 14 – Beachcombing Creations

July 28 – You Can’t Escape the Library! (this program will be repeated at 4:00 pm)

The library is unable to accommodate daycares and school groups at these activities.

12:00 pm: Cinco Ranch Branch Library Book Clubs Announce July Reading Selections

Share your love of reading with other book lovers at one of the book clubs that meet monthly at Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy. New members are always welcome.

The Literary Lunch League Book Club will meet on Wednesday, July 6, beginning at 12:00 noon, in the Conference Classroom. The book to be discussed is The Stationery Shop, written by Marjan Kamali. This title is available in print and digitally as an ebook and e-audiobook on OverDrive; additional print copies are available at the check-out desk. Those attending are invited to bring a lunch, if desired. This book club meets on the first Wednesday of every month.

 

Members of the “The Butler Did It Mystery Book Club meet on the second Thursday of the month, beginning at 2:00 pm, in the Conference Classroom. The book club discussion on Thursday, July 14, will be on Dead Land, written by Sara Paretsky. This title is available in print, audio, and digitally as an ebook and e-audiobook on OverDrive and as an e-audiobook on Hoopla; additional print copies are available at the check-out desk.

2:00 pm: Library Presents “The Aztec Princess” Bilingual Fable For Children

In conjunction with the Summer Reading Challenge, Fort Bend County Libraries will host a special storytelling performance for children, “The Aztec Princess,” on Wednesday, July 6, beginning at 2:00 pm, in the Meeting Room of the Cinco Ranch Branch Library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy.

The performance will be repeated at 3:00 pm.

Presented by Express Children’s Theatre, “The Aztec Princess” is a bilingual Mexican fable told by a time-traveling princess. In this interactive storytelling adventure, the Aztec Princess tells two classic fables – one about making good choices and another about stranger danger – while teaching English and Spanish vocabulary along the way.

Express Children’s Theatre is a multicultural theatre company that has been creating and performing work for children and their families in the Houston area for more than 30 years.

This performance is for children entering grades 1 through 5 ONLY. A free ticket – available one hour prior to the performance – is required for admission.

Made possible by a grant through Young Audiences of Houston, the performance is free and open to the public.

3:00 pm: Libraries Host “King Rhythm” Musical Performance For Children

In conjunction with the Summer Reading Challenge, Fort Bend County Libraries will host a special musical performance of “King Rhythm,” by Voices from the Past, on Thursday, July 7, beginning at 3:00 pm, in the Meeting Room of the Mission Bend Branch Library, located at 8421 Addicks Clodine Road in northeast Fort Bend County. The performance is for students entering grades K through 5.

The performance will be repeated at the University Branch Library on Monday, July 11, beginning at 2:30 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 14010 University Blvd in Sugar Land, on the UH campus. A free ticket – available one hour prior to the performance – is required for admission to the performance at this location ONLY.

Singer/storyteller Hope Shiver and percussionist David Keepman form the duo of Voices from the Past. In this interactive musical performance, they take the audience on a fantastic ride through African-American history via popular musical styles. Selected audience members will be invited to join in the fun by donning costumes and pantomime, becoming loveable characters like Bluesy, Jazzy, and others.

Shiver has performed as a soloist with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Grand Opera, and the St. Louis Symphony. Her singing talents have taken her all over the world – Japan, Italy, France, Greenland, Egypt, Sweden, and Spain – performing for world leaders and appreciative audiences in international tours of Showboat and Porgy and Bess.
