Libraries Announce Launch Of New Streaming-Video Service

Fort Bend County Libraries announces the addition of a new online streaming-video service, Access Video On Demand, to its eLibrary collection of digital resources. Library patrons will have instant, unlimited, 24/7 access to thousands of world-class documentaries, award-winning educational films, independent movies, and helpful instructional videos covering a wide range of subjects.This new video-streaming service includes two collections -- “Access Video on Demand: Master Collection” for adults and “Access Video On Demand: Just for Kids.” From arts and humanities to science, technology, and math, Access Video On Demand (AVOD) provides instant access to a wide range of subjects for library patrons of all ages.
In the AVOD: Master Collection, producers such as the History Channel, HBO, BBC, Nova, A&E, and Ken Burns provide documentaries on topics like business, career planning, health, history, travel, and more! Library patrons can watch a Bob Dylan concert, go on a trip with Rick Steves, learn to bake with Julia Child, or work out with Jeanette Jenkins!
AVOD: Just for Kids provides thousands of age-appropriate, advertisement-free videos that children, parents, and caregivers will love. Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow, PBS, and the Electric Company are a few of the many offerings that are available. Interactives games, puzzles, and quizzes are sure to entertain, educate, and inspire young library patrons on this kid-safe media platform.
Looking for homework help? AVOD: Just for Kids includes educational, historical, and popular content, with full transcripts of programs, a citation builder for bibliographies, and video-clipping tools that help the user embed the video in a presentation.
Library patrons need a valid FBCL card (or eCard) to access the service, and there are no check-out limits, waitlists, or overdue fines. Completely browser-based and mobile friendly, the streaming videos can be viewed on PCs, Macs, iPads, smart TVs, and other internet-enabled mobile devices. No app or special software is required.
It is possible to create an account with AVOD and create playlists for videos to be watched in the future. With an account, patrons may also pause videos and resume at a later time.
All videos come with public-performance rights for classroom or other public use, and new videos are added monthly.

May 17, 2021Book lovers don’t need to let COVID-19 social distancing keep them from sharing their opinions and feelings about books with other readers.Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) will offer an online option for book-club meetings this spring – all book-club meetings will take place online through Webex so that readers can interact with others in real time and participate from the comfort and safety of home!
Fort Bend County Libraries’ book clubs represent a wide variety of books and genres. Book clubs that were previously specific to particular branches can now be enjoyed by readers all across the library system.
Books can be requested by calling the libraries, or by placing them on hold in the online catalog. They can be picked up from the libraries through FBCL’s Books & More! Curbside Pick-Up service. Digital versions of some books are also available for download from FBCL’s eLibrary.
Because the book club meetings will be live-streamed over the Internet via Webex, participants should register for the meetings by going to the FBCL website – www.fortbend.lib.tx.us – click on “Classes and Events,” and register for the book club meetings of their choice. A link to the Webex sessions will be emailed to all who have registered.

“Cyber Security” – Monday, May 10 (pre-recorded video)
In this multi-part series, learn about steps to take to ensure your online accounts remain safe and secure from virtual attacks and breaches. Get tips on how to create strong passwords, recognize and avoid email scams, verify “fake news,” avoid malware and viruses, and protect one’s privacy on social media.
“MS Word Survival Basics: How to Create Letterheads and Stationary” – Tuesday, May 11 (pre-recorded video).
In this segment of the MS Word Survival Basics series, learn how to create custom letterhead. Library staff will demonstrate how to insert and format an image in the header so that a logo and slogan appear at the top of every page. Viewers will also learn how to use watermarks to create custom stationary.
“Intro to 3D Printing” – Monday, May 17 (pre-recorded video)
This 2-part instructional video will provide an overview of 3D printing. Learn about how the 3D printer works, the process for printing, and how to use Tinkercad to design 3D objects.
“Computers 101” – Monday, May 24 (pre-recorded video)
FBCL's multi-part "Computers 101" series consists of basic, introductory videos providing an overview of computers and how they can be used. Episodes in the series cover the physical parts of a computer, the differences between a Microsoft PC and an Apple Mac computer, and the meanings of different computer terms. Get an overview of the software programs in the Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint), and much more.

May 17, 2021Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) will present online genealogy and Texas-geography programs in May for local-history buffs and family-history researchers.On Tuesday, May 11, FBCL staff member Bryan Bankston will present an “Intro to Texas Digital Sanborn Maps.” Find large-scale maps of Texas towns and cities dated from 1867-1970. Bankston will explain how to access this online resource from inside or outside the libraries. Learn about the types of information that can be gathered by studying these maps.
On Monday, May 17, FBCL’s Genealogy and Local History department manager Daniel Sample will present “Family-History Research: Develop a Research Plan for Difficult Questions.” Sample will demonstrate how creating a research plan can help get past road blocks or unsolved mysteries in one’s genealogy search. Get tips on ways to narrow the focus of one’s research and break down brick walls obstructing the past.

May 17, 2021The Podcast Club at Fort Bend County Libraries’ University Branch Library will focus on “Mysteries” in May. The Podcast Club meeting will take place online via Webex, so listeners throughout the area can participate from the comfort and safety of home.Similar to a book club, the Podcast Club provides an opportunity for podcast listeners to get together to discuss podcast selections from a themed podcast-listening list and share their opinions on trending topics. Each month features a different theme, along with a short list of podcast episodes.
The next meeting of the University Branch Library Podcast Club will take place on Monday, May 17, beginning at 5:30 pm. A link to the Webex meeting will be emailed to all who register.

“Episode 1: What We Know” – Limetown (33 minutes). In this fictional mystery, Lia Haddock is an investigative journalist with APR looking into the story of the disappearance of the town of Limetown. Episode 1 lays the groundwork and background details for an intriguing mystery series.
“Could I Learn to Think Like Sherlock Holmes?” – CrowdScience (34 minutes). Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous fictional detective is renowned for his feats of memory, his observational capacity, tireless energy, and an almost supernatural ability to solve the most perplexing crimes from seemingly unconnected facts. Does the way Sherlock Holmes solves mysteries go beyond fiction? What does science have to say about the matter? In this podcast, fact is pitted against fiction with a leading forensic expert and a sleep scientist, and presenter Marnie Chesterton puts herself to the test under the guidance of memory champion Simon Reinhard.

May 18, 2021Fort Bend County Libraries’ Law Librarian, Andrew Bennett, will present a series of “Pro Se Basics” online demonstrations of the informational legal resources that are available to the public at the Fort Bend County Law Library. These programs will be virtual sessions live-streamed via Webex; they will NOT be in person.The introductory classes will take place on Tuesdays May 4, 11, 18, and 25, from 10:00 to 11:00 am.
The classes will introduce important procedural information for self-represented litigants who wish to begin their legal research, represent themselves in court, or seek resources for their Family Law or Probate issues. Individuals may choose to attend individual sessions or the whole series.
The material that will be discussed is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for the advice of an attorney. Librarians cannot provide legal advice or recommend specific forms.
The May schedule is as follows:
May 4– “Probate 102.” This class covers information regarding Probate Courts in Fort Bend County. Learn specific rules and policies for the courts, where to find and file paperwork, and where to find additional legal assistance.
May 11– “Courthouse 102.” This class covers the introduction to civil litigation after the answer phase, including discovery, trial, and post-trial. Learn about resources that can be used to address these issues, and become aware of various problems that could arise.
May 18– “Family Law 101.” Learn about the resources that are available in the Law Library for family-law cases, as well as free online resources. Get tips on using the library’s catalog to find resources throughout the library system, and hear about the library’s online databases that can be accessed from home.
May 25-- “Family Law 102.” This class will provide a more in-depth exploration of family-law databases and digital resources. Those viewing this session will also learn how to find paperwork post the petition phase.
The series will continue in June.

May 20, 2021Book lovers don’t need to let COVID-19 social distancing keep them from sharing their opinions and feelings about books with other readers.Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) will offer an online option for book-club meetings this spring – all book-club meetings will take place online through Webex so that readers can interact with others in real time and participate from the comfort and safety of home!
Fort Bend County Libraries’ book clubs represent a wide variety of books and genres. Book clubs that were previously specific to particular branches can now be enjoyed by readers all across the library system.
Books can be requested by calling the libraries, or by placing them on hold in the online catalog. They can be picked up from the libraries through FBCL’s Books & More! Curbside Pick-Up service. Digital versions of some books are also available for download from FBCL’s eLibrary.

May 22, 2021In preparation for the Summer Reading Club, which begins May 31, Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) will have special online family programs for children of all ages each week rather than the regular virtual story-time activities.Because of the COVID-19 social-distancing recommendations, FBCL is continuing to offer children’s programming virtually, so that families can participate from the comfort and safety of home.
Videos of the family programs will be posted on the online Virtual calendar on FBCL’s website on the scheduled date.
Families of toddlers and preschoolers may pick up to-go activity packets from the library for the month. These packets contain fun craft activities that can be done at home. Call the libraries to request to pick up the packets through the Curbside Pick-Up service, or visit one of the five FBCL buildings that are open to the public.
May 15 – “Yoga + Mindfulness” (pre-recorded video)
This program is presented by Kinetic Vibez, in conjunction with Young Audiences of Houston. Kinetic Vibez is an artistic wellness movement that focuses on introducing a holistically creative lifestyle to youth, ages 7 to 19. By fusing yoga, meditation, and hip-hop, students can overcome stress, depression, and bullying. In this online program, students will learn the basics of the yogic system of meditation, which includes guided stretches, guided breathing practices, and guided sound-based meditation. Students will learn how to use these practices to develop a strong sense of mindfulness, increase mental and physical flexibility, and take control of any depression, anxiety, or stress they may be experiencing.
May 22 – “Fancy Nancy Tea Party” (pre-recorded video)
Watching this program, children can participate at home by dressing in their favorite party clothes while they listen to a “Fancy Nancy” story and enjoy an afternoon tea party. Library staff will demonstrate how to make a fancy wand and crown and offer instructions on how to create “Fancy Nancy” inspired snacks. Children may even pick up some etiquette tips to practice at home! A limited number of craft packets for this activity will be available for pick up at the First Colony Branch Library beginning May 17. Activity sheets may also be downloaded from the online calendar on the FBCL website and printed out at home. This activity is sponsored by the Friends of the First Colony Branch Library.
May 31-August 31– “Tails and Tales” Summer Reading Challenge Registration
FBCL presents special reading challenges during the summer to encourage reading among children from birth and up. Children are invited to read a lot of great books and earn fun prizes for reading.
Participants may register for the Summer Reading Challenge (SRC) online by going to the FBCL website and clicking on the “SRC Sign-Up” image, which will become available on May 31. When the online registration form has been completed, readers will then have their own online page on which to record their books and reading time. Participants may also register and log books/reading time by downloading the free Beanstack Tracker app to their mobile device from the Apple App or Google Play stores. Fort Bend County Libraries and the Summer Reading Challenge will appear as options when the program starts on May 31.
Video links for the SRC programs will be available on FBCL’s online calendar and on the “FBCL Virtual Programs & Educational Resources” Facebook group page in June and July.

May 22, 2021Fort Bend County Libraries will present a series of online, craft- and hobby-themed video demonstrations to introduce people to new hobbies and activities, and to give current crafters inspiration and new ideas.Because of social-distancing recommendations, Fort Bend County Libraries will offer virtual craft and hobby activities online this spring, so that they can be viewed from the comfort and safety of home.

“Crystal-Heart Pendant for Mom– Monday, May 3 (pre-recorded video)
Create a handcrafted pendant with a heart-shaped crystal that can be used for a necklace, set of earrings, or as a charm. Materials needed for this wire-wrapped pendant include: a crystal or stone, craft wire (20-gauge and 24-gauge), scissors or wire cutter, and any form of pliers.
“Book-Page Rose” – Wednesday, May 5 (pre-recorded video)
Library staff will demonstrate how to use pages from an old book, scissors, and hot glue to create a paper rose for Mother’s Day.
“Flower-Drawing Workshop” – Wednesday, May 5 (live-streamed)
In this live-streamed Webex event, learn how to draw five types of flowers. Viewers are encouraged to have a pen or pencil and paper so that they can follow along in this online instruction. Registration is required; a link to the Webex session will be emailed to all who register.

The average person produces almost 2,000 pounds of trash each year. In this live-streamed Webex activity, representatives from Unite and Inspire will demonstrate how to take used or left-over materials and upcycle or recycle them into something beautiful. Learn how to recycle different materials to make beads, which can then be used to make a necklace or bracelet. Materials for this project include: cereal box or magazine papers, clear nail polish, 10-12 skewers, 1 package of yarn/string, scissors, and glue.
