5:00 pm: Libraries Support New Writers With  National Novel-Writing Month Activities

In recognition of National Novel-Writing Month in November, Fort Bend County Libraries encourages fledgling writers or anyone who has ever wanted to write a novel to join in this coast-to-coast annual writing challenge.

Established in 1999, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a creative-writing project designed to empower and inspire vibrant creativity among aspiring writers, who are encouraged to write 50,000 words of a novel in the 30 days of November.

Throughout the month, Fort Bend County Libraries will host programs intended to encourage new writers by providing tips and tricks, writing and publishing advice, and support from other aspiring novelists.

The Story Spinners Writing Club, which normally meets once a month at George Memorial Library in Richmond, will meet weekly on Thursdays, November 2, 9, 16, and 30, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. The topics will be “Beginnings,” “Ambiance,” “Action,” and “Plot Holes.” From beginning blogger to published novelist, writers of all genres and experience levels are welcome to join the Story Spinners Writing Club to write, share, learn, support, network, and critique each other’s work.

Write-ins – informal gatherings where novice writers can network with each other for encouragement and inspiration – are scheduled on Mondays, November 6, 13, 20, and 27, at two locations: George Memorial Library in Richmond from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, and at the Sienna Branch Library from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Join fellow writers for quiet writing time, word sprints, and feedback.

The “Prose Pros Writing Group” at the Cinco Ranch Branch Library will have a demonstration of the features and tools available in FBCL’s Online Writers’ Corner  on  Monday, November 6, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Those attending will learn about three unique tools – PressBooks Public, the Indie Author Project, and the BiblioBoard Library – that enable writers, as well as readers, to create, publish, and discover digital content made by and for the local community. New writers are encouraged to attend this open meeting.

Additional demonstrations of FBCL’s Online Writers’ Corner will take place at the Sugar Land Branch Library (Wednesday, November 15, at 10:30 am; and Thursday, November 16, at 6:30 pm) and at the Mission Bend Branch Library (Wednesday, November 15, at 6:00 pm). Seating is limited at these demonstrations, and registration is required at these locations only.

The Missouri City Branch Library will host a “Nothing Too Novel” writing workshop on Saturday, November 11, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Local author KC Lewis will share the basic steps for getting started, from brainstorming, researching, setting goals, and time management, to editing, revision, and publishing. During the workshop's second half, participants will have a chance to exercise these skills and draft their own stories. A resident of Pearland, Lewis is the author of the sci-fi novel Argentum: Recursion. This workshop is made possible by the Friends of the Missouri City Branch Library.

Aspiring writers are invited to participate in FBCL’s annual Book Festival on Saturday, November 18, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, at George Memorial Library. This event will include writers’ workshops for children as well as adults, meet-and-greet opportunities with local authors, and a keynote address by Rubén Degollado, author of The Family Izquierdo. The Mission Bend Branch Library will host a Writer’s Workshop on Monday, November 27, beginning at 6:00 pm. In this introductory workshop, learn how to use words to sketch a story, then fill in colorful details to create a literary masterpiece from one’s imagination. Registration required.

6:00 pm: Abbreviated Schedule Of Children’s Programs At Cinco Ranch Branch Library In November

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library, 2620 Commercial Center Boulevard in Katy, presents a variety of free children’s programs – Family Story Time, Pajama Night Story Time, and After-School Breaks – every month. Because of elections and holidays, the schedule of children’s programs will be abbreviated in November.

Family Story Time takes place on Wednesdays and Thursdays, beginning at 10:15 and 11:30 am, in the Meeting Room. Families with children of all ages will enjoy stories, songs, and action rhymes. Craft packets will be given out at the end of each program, so that children may take them home to enjoy.

The schedule of Family Story Time activities is as follows:

November 1, 2, and 8 – NO PROGRAMS because of elections

November 9 – Hair

November 15 and 16 – Construction

November 22 – Thanksgiving

November 23 – LIBRARY CLOSED

November 29 and 30 – Dance Party

Pajama Night Story Time – an evening alternative for families unable to attend during the day – will take place on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays, from 6:00 to 6:30 pm. Because of elections, this program will NOT take place on November 7 because of elections. The theme on November 21 will be “Thanksgiving.”

Family Fun Night will take place on Mondays, November 13 and 27, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, in the Meeting Room. Families with children of all ages are invited to an evening of games, building challenges, and more.

Mother Goose Time – for pre-walking infants from newborn to 12 months of age – takes place on Tuesdays, from 10:15 to 10:45 am. This activity provides caregiver/infant multisensory circle-time activities -- including simple sign language, folksongs and lullabies, and finger plays -- that are especially designed to stimulate babies’ social, emotional, and physical development through rhythm and music. Attendance is limited to 15 infants. This activity will NOT take place on November 7 because of elections.

After-School Break: Chess & Go will take place on Wednesday, November 15, from 4:30 to 5:00 pm, in Meeting Room 2. This program is for school-aged children in grades 1 through 5. Students will learn how to play the games of Chess and Go.

Creative Connections – activities for school-aged children in grades 4 through 8 – takes place on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays, from 4:30-5:00 pm. The schedule of activities is as follows:

  • November 2 – Typing Class. This activity will take place in the Computer Lab. Registration required.
  • November 16 – 3D Puzzle & Painting. Students will create fall decorations for the Youth Services department.

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Mission Bend Branch Library, located at 8421 Addicks Clodine Road in northeast Fort Bend County, near Sugar Land and Alief, presents a variety of free children’s programs every month. The November schedule is as follows:

Pajama Night Story Time – every other Wednesday, from 6:30 to 7:15 pm -- gives families with children of all ages an opportunity to enjoy stories, songs, and action rhymes together. Pajamas and blankets are welcome! Program dates are November 1, 15, and 29.

Preschool Story Time – Tuesdays, from 10:15 to 11:00 am -- provides stories, movies, and age-appropriate craft activities for children from 3 to 6 years of age. The schedule is as follows:

November 7 – NO PROGRAM because of elections.

November 14 – Kindness

November 21 – Feel-Good Food

November 28 – I Love Me (Human Body)

 Toddler Time – Wednesdays, from 10:15 to 11:00 am -- offers caregiver/child activities, stories, and songs for older babies, from 1 to 3 years of age. The themes are the same as those for Preschool Story Time each week. Program dates are: November 1, 15, 22, and 29; this activity will NOT take place on November 8 because of elections.

Mother Goose Time – Thursdays, from 10:15 to 10:45 am – provides caregiver/infant multisensory circle-time activities -- including simple sign language, folksongs and lullabies, and finger plays -- that are specially designed to stimulate babies’ social, emotional, and physical development through rhythm and music. The “Creative Connection: Crafty Friends-giving” activity – for youth in grades 4 through 8 – will take place on Saturday, November 18, from 2:30 to 3:30 pm. Students will enjoy crafts, activities, and snacks with friends old and new.

These programs are free and open to the public. Registration is required for the Hour of Technology class ONLY. 10:00 am: Plane of the Month! – Featuring Osh Kosh Winners!

Every month, the Lone Star Flight Museum welcomes a new and visiting aircraft, giving visitors a chance to see a new plane at the museum all year long. Here is what’s in store:

Our very own, LSFM Chairman of the Board, Scott Rozzell’s aircraft came home a winner! At this year’s EAA annual AirVenture in Oshkosh Wisconsin, his 1941 Fairchild F-24 was named the Champion Antique Aircraft for the WWII era. Another big winner…now on display at the museum, and an incredible museum supporter, the Air Legends Foundation FG-1D Corsair was named Warbirds BEST FIGHTER at AirVenture as well.

Catch the holiday spirit at Fort Bend County Libraries! Throughout the month, the Cinco Ranch Branch Library and the Mission Bend Branch Library will have a variety of programs, from performances to holiday-themed crafts and activities, for teens and adults.

Fort Bend County Libraries will have an educational series focusing on “Art & Architecture” this fall. The next program in the series, “Art & Architecture: Gothic Cathedrals,” will take place on Saturday, December 9, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, in the Meeting Room of the Cinco Ranch Branch Library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy.

In this segment in the series, architecture professor Sheba Akhtar will talk about the design origins of Gothic Cathedrals, which flourished in Europe during the High and Late Middle Ages, originating in 12th-century France and lasting into the 16th century.

Hear about how characteristics of the Gothic period -- including urbanization, economic prosperity, professional guilds, the crusades (1095-1291), and the veneration of the Virgin Mary -- influenced the design of structures such as the Basilica of St. Denis, Chartres Cathedral, and Notre Dame Cathedral. Akhtar will also talk about Abbott Suger and the incorporation of stained-glass windows in structures.

An assistant architecture professor at Prairie View A&M University, Akhtar received her Master of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania and taught art and architecture history for more than 20 years. She has practiced as an architect in the United States, England, Scotland, Jordan, and Pakistan. She is the author of “Of Colour and Form” and numerous articles on art and architecture.

Fort Bend County Libraries is looking for the best Gingerbread-House makers in Fort Bend County! Area residents are encouraged to create a gingerbread-house masterpiece, take a picture, and submit it via email for the library system’s third-annual Gingerbread-House Contest. The deadline for submission is December 26, at 11:59 pm.

Rules for participation are as follows:

One entry per person.

Multiple members of a family/household may participate with individual projects. Take a photo of each individual gingerbread-house entry. Each photo should be submitted with the creator's name and title of their masterpiece.

Email the picture to SocialMedia@fortbend.lib.tx.us by 11:59 pm, on December 26, to enter.

All submitted images will be posted in an album on Fort Bend County Libraries’ Facebook page and Instagram account on December 27. The public is invited to vote for their favorite entry. Voting ends on January 3.

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library will host a special performance by the Shimmer Flute Choir on Saturday, December 16, beginning at 10:30 am, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy.

The flute ensemble will perform a musical interpretation of the children’s story The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and a musically narrated telling of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.

The performance will be followed by refreshments and wintery crafts.

Founded by director Donna Pattison in 2006, the Shimmer Flute Choir consists of amateur and professional flute players from the greater Houston area. The ensemble features traditional “C” flutes, as well as piccolo, alto, and bass flutes. The groups repertoire covers a wide variety of genres, from Irish tunes and Renaissance music to American folk classics and pop.

12:00 pm: Fulshear Branch Library Soft Opening Officially Slated for December 18

Fort Bend County Libraries is proud to announce that the new Fulshear Branch Library will open to the public at noon on Monday, December 18.

Library staff only recently gained access to the building, so they have been working feverishly to make the library as ready as possible for the “soft opening” in December.

A Grand Opening celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for January, when county officials and library staff will showcase the full extent of resources and services that will be available to the public.

“It’s been a long time coming, but we’re very excited to finally open the doors, welcome everyone in, and show off this wonderful new building, even if everything is not completely set up yet,” says Library Director Clara Russell. “It is considerably larger than the old building, so we have much more space to work with, and we look forward to unveiling the full extent of the wonderful offerings we have in store for the public when we have the Grand Opening in January!”

An oft-delayed schedule has impeded previous opening-date targets several times. Unforeseen setbacks, vendor coordination, and supply-chain issues have frustrated everyone involved in the project, as well as Fulshear-area citizens who have been waiting for the new library to open.

“We’ll be opening in December with the most basic essentials for a library, so we ask for everyone’s patience while we work to complete the transformation over the next few weeks in preparation for the Grand Opening celebration,” says Russell. “Even with the rough patches, I think we’re going to be in good shape when we open those doors.”

The new Fulshear Branch Library is located at 6350 GM Library Road, off Texas Heritage Parkway, north of FM 1093. Once the Fulshear Branch Library opens on December 18, the regular business hours will be as follows:

Wed   10:00 am – 6:00 pm

Thu    10:00 am – 9:00 pm
