The deadline to enter a digital photo has been extended to January 25. To be eligible for competition, contestants must submit a digital copy of their photograph by uploading it through an online form on the FBCL website. Prizes will be awarded for 1st-place ($200 gift card), 2nd-place ($150 gift card), and 3rd-place ($100 gift card). Winners will be announced on Monday, February 1. Photos will be displayed in a virtual gallery on FBCL’s website throughout the month of February. Winning photographs will be determined by a panel of judges, who will make their determinations based on the following criteria: relationship to contest theme, composition, focus, lighting, emotional impact, and creativity. Photographs will be anonymous until after the judging is complete. All entries must be original, unpublished, and the work of the person submitting it. Only one photo may be entered per person. The photo can be in color or black-and-white and should be submitted as a high-resolution (1 MB or higher) .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .png, .eps, .tif, or .pdf. Digital manipulations of the photos should be limited to: cropping, re-sizing, red-eye reduction, and reasonable adjustments to color and contrast. FBCL reserves the right to print or display any entry to this contest for an indefinite period of time. Entries will be exhibited online for the general public to see, so they should be appropriate for all ages to view. The photographer is responsible for obtaining verbal or written release for public use of the photo from all identifiable individuals in the photograph submitted; the photographer accepts all liability from the use of a photo where this release has not been obtained. The contest is open to amateur photographers only. Professional photographers, who earn a living by selling their photographs, are not eligible to participate. 9:00 am: Libraries Celebrate Black History Month With Special Online Programs9:00 am: Libraries Celebrate Black History Month With Special Online Programs – “Before 1619: Why Black History Month Matters” -- Monday, February 1 (pre-recorded video) With the help of genetic testing and historical evidence, many African Americans are finding that they are modern descendants of the Igbo people from the African continent. During the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade of the 1600s, a large number of Igbo people were abducted and forced into slavery. This presentation will focus on the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people before 1619. Learn about the culture, religion, food, and traditions of the Igbo people, who were the ancestors of many African-Americans today. “A Tour of African-American Cemeteries in Fort Bend County” -- Monday, February 8 (pre-recorded video) Genealogy and Local History department manager Daniel Sample will highlight some of the African-American cemeteries in the county, including the recently discovered burial ground in Sugar Land. Learn about the history of the cemeteries, notable people buried there, and more. “Black History Month Digital Scavenger Hunt” -- Thursday, February 11 (all day) History sleuths must use their knowledge of African-American history and their research skills to complete this scavenger hunt. The classes will introduce important procedural information for self-represented litigants who wish to begin their legal research, represent themselves in court, or seek resources for their Family Law or Probate issues. Individuals may choose to attend individual sessions or the whole series. The material that will be discussed is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for the advice of an attorney. Librarians cannot provide legal advice or recommend specific forms. February 2– “Family Law 101.” Learn about the resources that are available in the Law Library for family-law cases, as well as free online resources. Get tips on using the library’s catalog to find resources throughout the library system, and hear about the library’s online databases that can be accessed from home. February 9– “Probate 101.” Learn about the resources that are available in the Law Library for probate cases, as well as free online resources. February 16– “Introduction to Legal Research.” This class will introduce the basics of legal research. Those attending will gain a better understanding of the difference between primary and secondary resources, how to read legal citations, and where to find legal resources in print and online. February 23-- “Courthouse 101.” Self-represented litigants will get a basic introduction to the legal system. Learn about the difference between civil and criminal cases, the basic parts of a legal document, the different types of legal documents, and where to file legal documents. Gain a better understanding of the differences between district courts, county courts, and justice of the peace courts, learn how they interact with each other, and how individuals might be involved with the courts. Viewers will have an opportunity to submit questions for the authors and ask about their books and their experiences. The series will kick off on Saturday, February 6, at 2:00 pm, with an interview with Tonya Duncan Ellis. A former journalist, Ellis is the author of the Amazon bestselling Sophie Washington children’s book series. She is also a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and the Authors Guild. On Saturday, February 20, at 2:00 pm, the featured author is Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton. An internationally-known writer, educator, activist, and performer, Mouton is a Poet Laureate Emeritus of Houston. Formerly ranked the #2 best female performance poet in the world, Mouton has established herself as a notable force in the performance- and slam-poetry world. Her work has appeared in Houston Noir, The BreakBeat Poets Black Girl Magic, the Texas Observer, and Fjords Journal, and on platforms such as NPR, BBC, ABC, Apple News, Blavity, Upworthy, and across the TedX circuit. The final author spotlight will feature Crystal Allen on Saturday, February 27, at 2:00 pm. The author of the Mya Tybbs middle school series, Allen works extensively with schools across Texas to encourage children to write their stories.
