6:00 pm: February Youth Activities At Cinco Ranch Branch Library

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library, 2620 Commercial Center Boulevard in Katy, presents a variety of free children’s programs -- Family Story Time, Pajama Night Story Time, and After-School Breaks -- every month.

During Family Story Time and Pajama Night Story Time, families with children of all ages will enjoy stories, songs, and action rhymes. Craft packets will be given out at the end of each program, so that children may take them home to enjoy.

Family Story Time takes place on Wednesdays and Thursdays, beginning at 10:15 and 11:30 am, in the Meeting Room. Families with children of all ages will enjoy stories, songs, and action rhymes. Craft packets will be given out at the end of each program, so that children may take them home to enjoy. The schedule of Family Story Time activities is as follows:

February 1 and 2 – Dance Party

February 8 and 9 – Family

February 15 and 16 – Hugs & Kisses

February 22 and 23 – Dance Party

Pajama Night Story Time – an evening alternative for families unable to attend during the day – will take place on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays, from 6:00 to 6:30 pm. Program dates are February 7 and 21, and the themes will be “Family” and “Dance Party.”

 Stretches & Stories – for families with children of all ages -- will take place on Thursdays, February 9 and 23, from 4:30 to 5:00 pm; the themes will be “Forest” and “Desert.” Families will enjoy stories, participating in gentle yoga and dance, and learn calming breathing techniques. Families may bring yoga mats.

 Family Game Night will take place on Monday, February 13, from 6:00 to 6:45 pm, in the Meeting Room. Families with children of all ages are invited to play a variety of strategy and classic board games. Hear tips and tricks to help advance skill levels.

Family Build Night will take place on Monday, February 27, from 6:00 to 6:45 pm, in the Meeting Room. Families with children of all ages will enjoy a fun-filled building challenge using LEGOs and other mixed materials during this free-play time.

10:15 am: February Youth Activities At Cinco Ranch Branch Library

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library, 2620 Commercial Center Boulevard in Katy, presents a variety of free children’s programs -- Family Story Time, Pajama Night Story Time, and After-School Breaks -- every month.

During Family Story Time and Pajama Night Story Time, families with children of all ages will enjoy stories, songs, and action rhymes. Craft packets will be given out at the end of each program, so that children may take them home to enjoy.

In addition to the family activities for all ages, the Cinco Ranch Branch Library also offers age-specific programs, with activities specially designed for different ages and stages of development.

Mother Goose Time -- for pre-walking infants from age 1 month to 12 months – takes place on Tuesdays, from 10:15 to 10:45 am. This activity provides caregiver/infant multisensory circle-time activities -- including simple sign language, folksongs and lullabies, and finger plays -- that are especially designed to stimulate babies’ social, emotional, and physical development through rhythm and music. Attendance is limited and registration is required.

Kinder Korner: Oh, No! Playdough!” will take place on Wednesday, February 8, from 4:30 to 5:00 pm. Kinder Korner is a time for kindergartners to enjoy stories, movies, crafts, and other activities. This month, students will make a mini cake out of playdough for their Valentine.

After-School Break: Learn Something New in 2023” will take place on Wednesday, February 15, from 4:30 to 5:00 pm, in Meeting Room 2. This activity is for students in grades 1 through 5. Create a vision board for the library by imagining things to explore in the new year. Learn about different library resources to obtain those goals. Student drawings will be displayed on the Youth Services bulletin board.

Creative Connections – activities for school-aged children in grades 4 through 8 – will take place on the 1st and 3rd Thursday, from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. The schedule of activities is as follows:

  • February 2 – Typing Club. Students will improve typing speed and accuracy. This activity will take place in the Computer Lab.
  • February 16 – Craft Day. This activity will take place in the Multi-purpose Room.

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library, 8100 FM 359 South in Fulshear, presents free children’s programs every month.

Family Story Time takes place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 10:30 to 11:00 am, in the Meeting Room of the library. Families with children of all ages will enjoy stories, songs, and action rhymes. Craft packets will be given out at the end of each program, so that children may take them home to enjoy.

Each week has a different theme. The schedule for February is as follows:

  • February 1 – Space
  • February 7 and 8 – Things That Go
  • February 14 and 15 – Love
  • February 21 and 22 – Books & Libraries
  • February 28 -- Rodeo

After-School Breaks – crafts, movies, stories, and more for school-aged children in grades 1 through 5 – take place on the 1st and 3rd Thursday, from 4:30 to 5:00 pm, in the Meeting Room. The schedule of activities is as follows:

  • February 2– Building Club. Try out a LEGO building challenge, build a sand castle, or create a bot maze!
  • February 16 – Marble Mayhem. Work in teams to create an amazing marble run before time runs out.

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library will present a special workshop for job hunters -- “Job-Readiness Toolkit” -- on Tuesday, February 28, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, in the Multi-Purpose Room of the library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy.

Workforce Solutions’ Regional Facilitator Joshua Allmon will provide helpful tips for job hunters who would like to sharpen their job-hunting skills. Those attending this workshop will learn how to communicate more effectively by improving their applications, resumés, introductions, and interviewing skills.

This workshop is part of a series presented by Workforce Solutions. The next program in the series, “Sharpening Your Interviewing Skills,” will take place on Monday, March 20.

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library will present the program “Butterfly Gardening,” on Saturday, March 4, from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy.

Fort Bend County Master Gardeners will talk about which plants attract different types of butterflies to gardens. Discover which plants are hosts for caterpillars, and which are sources of nectar for adult butterflies.

Learn about some of the online resources that are available for family-history research at a special program, “Genealogy Online,” on Tuesday, March 7, from 10:30 to 11:30 am, in the Computer Lab at Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy.

Learn more about some of the online resources that are available for family-history research, including FamilySearch.org and HeritageQuest. Library staff will provide an introduction to many of the free online resources that are available to the genealogical researcher, such as FindaGrave.com. Tips and strategies for a more efficient Internet search will also be demonstrated.

The program is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, and reservations are required. Those who are interested in more local-history or genealogy resources, are encouraged to join the Family-History Research FBCL Facebook group page. Managed by the Genealogy & Local History department at George Memorial Library in Richmond, the group page is an interactive, online forum for sharing genealogy tips and resources, as well as local-history stories.

11:00 am: Learn How To Research Your Family History At Library Program

Have you ever wondered where your ancestors came from?  Are you curious about their military service or medical history? Learn the basics of beginning your genealogy research at a special introductory program, “Researching Your Family History,” on Thursday, March 9, from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon, in the Meeting Room at Fort Bend County Libraries’ Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library, 8100 FM 359 South in Fulshear.

In this introductory class, beginning family-history researchers will learn how to start their research. Library staff will provide a basic introduction to many of the resources that are available to the beginning genealogical researcher. Items that will be introduced include print resources, materials that are available on microfilm, and basic online tools such as the Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest USA databases. Get tips on ways to search the databases, and learn how to fill out basic genealogical forms.

Anyone interested in more local-history or genealogy resources is encouraged to join the Family-History Research FBCL Facebook group page. Managed by the Genealogy & Local History department at George Memorial Library in Richmond, the group page is an interactive, online forum for sharing genealogy tips and resources, as well as local-history stories.

10:15 am: Musical Storytelling Performance For Children At Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library

Fort Bend County Libraries invites children entering grades K through 12 to a musical performance of “Storytelling Through Sound” on Thursday, March 16, from 10:15 to 11:00 am, in the Meeting Room at the Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library, located at 8100 FM 359 South in Fulshear.

Music tells stories, just like books. In this interactive musical storytelling performance, Houston harpist Hope Cowan will demonstrate the techniques that composers use to tell their stories. Children will then have an opportunity to invent their own sound story and hear it come to life on the harp.

One of Houston’s most sought-after event harpists, Cowan is principal harpist with the Symphony of Southeast Texas and is a founding member of both the Deciduous and the Lynx Trios. Current president of the Greater Houston Chapter of the American Harp Society, she is on the faculty for the Houston Summer Harp Festival and is an alumna of the Da Camera Youth Artist program.

Made possible by a grant through Young Audiences of Houston, the performance is free and open to the public. Registration is not required, but seating is limited to the first 50 guests.

Learn the basics of using this desktop-publishing software program to create greeting cards, invitations, forms, banners, signs, and much more by using templates and clip art.
