Get Advance Notice Of New Titles With Libraries’ “Author Alerts” Feature

    Jul 7, 2023

Library users can now get advance notice whenever a new title by a favorite author is added to Fort Bend County Libraries’ collection!

Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) has added an “Author Alerts” feature to the “Book Recommendations” section on the FBCL website. This service enables readers to be notified by email or text message when new titles or offerings by their chosen authors or performers are added to the FBCL collection.

Some of the notifications will be “pre-release.” These notifications are for titles that are in the process of being added to the collection, but are not yet available for checkout.

Readers can sign up for Author Alerts by clicking on the “Books, eLibrary, & More” tab on FBCL’s website and choosing “Book Recommendations” and then “Author Alerts.”

There is no limit to the number of authors, performers, or film studios that can be selected for notification. Library users can also choose the format(s) that they prefer, such as: book, ebook, audiobook on CD, e-audiobook, DVD, streaming video, large print, music CD, or streaming music. Multiple formats can be selected.

When an item by the reader’s chosen author is added to FBCL’s collection, an email/text will be sent within 24 hours notifying the reader of the new addition. The email/text will include a direct link to FBCL’s catalog, so that a hold can be placed on the new item immediately.

Library users can learn more about the Author Alerts feature during one-on-one “Ask a Librarian” sessions that will take place throughout the library system in July. These sessions are come-and-go periods when library users can ask questions about library services, new features, book recommendations, and much more.

The schedule of “Ask a Librarian” sessions in July is as follows:

    • July 7, 2:00-3:00 pm – Mission Bend Branch Library
    • July 27, 10:00-11:00 am – Cinco Ranch Branch Library, Katy

Library services are free and available to the public. For more information, see the Fort Bend County Libraries website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) or call the library system’s Communications Office (281-633-4734).

SHARE UPCYCLING TIPS AT LIBRARIES’ ONLINE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY CLUB

    Jul 17, 2023

Fort Bend County Libraries’ (FBCL) new “Living Sustainably Club” will meet online on Monday, July 17, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. The topic for the month will be “Share Your Upcycling Tips.”

FBCL’s Living Sustainably Club programs are livestreamed through Webex so that participants can participate virtually and interact with others in real time. This monthly club is an online one by choice -- a conscious effort to minimize the carbon footprint by reducing the use of fossil fuels.

For the July meeting, participants are invited to share tips and ideas on how to reuse items to prevent overfilling landfills. Discover how upcycling and steering away from disposable items can actually help save money, too!

Free and open to the public, the Living Sustainably Club meets online on the third Monday of every month. Each month, different topics will focus on discussing, educating, and demonstrating how everyone -- from individuals to businesses -- can live sustainably within a budget!

Registration is required; a link to the Webex teleconference will be emailed to all who register. To register online at the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us), click on “Classes & Events,” select “Virtual Programs,” and find the program on the date indicated. Participants may also register by calling FBCL’s Communications Office (281-633-4734).
