Dec 7, 2024The Friends of the Mission Bend Branch Library will host a Holiday Book Sale on Saturday, December 7, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 8421 Addicks Clodine Road, in northeast Fort Bend County.
People who love books, people who love bargains, and people who need to get rid of some spare change will find a lot in common at the book sale, where they will discover adult and children’s books, all at prices that are hard to beat.
Items of special interest at this book sale include: World War II history books, CDs, DVDs, children’s titles, adult fiction, cookbooks, and other nonfiction.
Prices range from 50¢ to $2.00, with special items slightly higher. Cash is accepted; bills larger than $20 cannot be accepted. No credit cards.
Donations of gently used books (fiction and nonfiction adult, youth, and children’s hardback and paperback books that are clean and not torn), CDs, DVDs are always welcome and may be taken to the library throughout the year during regular business hours. Textbooks published within the past five years are also accepted.
Items that cannot be accepted include cassettes, VHS tapes, encyclopedias, magazines, medical/legal/computer books older than 2020, or books that are damp, moldy, dirty, or insect ridden.
The Friends of the Mission Bend Branch Library organization is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation. Donations and contributions to the Friends are tax-deductible.
The Friends of the Mission Bend Branch Library organization is instrumental in funding library programs such as the children’s Summer Reading Challenge. Proceeds from the book sale and annual membership dues also help to underwrite the costs of special programming and various cultural events at the Mission Bend Branch Library.
Membership applications will be available for people who would like to join the Friends of the Mission Bend Branch Library.

Cinco Ranch Branch Library Hosts Marionette Show, "Sleeping Beauty" Cinco Ranch Branch Library Hosts Marionette Show, "Sleeping Beauty"

Dec 14, 2024The Youth Services department at Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library will present a special performance of the marionette puppet show, “Sleeping Beauty & the Handsome Prince,” on Saturday, December 14, beginning at 3:00 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy.
Master puppeteer Jean Kuecher, producer of Marionette Playhouse, will entertain children of all ages with her beautifully handcrafted marionettes on an elaborate stage, with music and lighting. In this puppet show, the Good Fairy helps the Handsome Prince battle the Wicked Witch’s dragon, but then the prince can’t remember how to awaken the Princess Sleeping Beauty! With a little help from the audience, maybe he will remember, and the Handsome Prince and the Princess Sleeping Beauty will be reunited! After the performance, stay to learn some of the backstage secrets.
The delicately handcrafted, 1/3-life-sized marionettes are built by Kuecher, who also designs their beautiful costumes and majestic scenery. A member of the Puppeteers of America and the Greater Houston Puppetry Guild, Kuecher holds a master’s degree in education, Counseling and Guidance from the University of Houston, and has used her puppetry skills to enrich classroom education.
Space is limited. Tickets are required for entry and will be handed out starting one hour before showtime. No late admittance.

Library to Host College-Preparedness Program on Financial Aid Library to Host College-Preparedness Program on Financial Aid

Dec 21, 2024Fort Bend County Libraries’ Mission Bend Branch Library will host a college-preparedness workshop, “College Series: Understanding College Financial Aid,” on Saturday, November 9, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm, in the Computer Lab of the library, located at 8421 Addicks Clodine Road, in northeast Fort Bend County.
William Keaton, Director of College Readiness at Yes Prep Public Schools, will talk about different types of college financial-aid applications.
Gain a better understanding of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA), and the College Scholarship Service (CSS) Profile.
College-bound students and their parents, as well as anyone returning to college after a break, are encouraged to attend.
The College Series will continue on Saturday, December 21, with a program on “Scholarships” at 2:00 pm. Keaton will talk about third-party scholarships and provide assistance with completing financial-aid applications and the FAFSA.
The workshops are free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, and registration is encouraged.
